Lot 3143

Kingdom of Parthia. Gotarzes II, AD 40-51. AR (Billon) Tetradrachm (14.60 g) minted at Seleukia, c. AD 47. Bareheaded bust left of Gotarzes II wearing diadem. Reverse: King enthroned right, receiving diadem from Tyche holding cornucopiae. Sellwood 65. Extremely Fine.

Parthian tetradrachms of this period display the year on the reverse in the upper central field, here "HNT". The Parthians emplyed the Seleukid era, and even included the month (second line under exergue; off the flan on this example). I well remember my paternal grandfather, cowboy at age 14, raconteur and welder, cautioning, "Watch out for coins saying 30 BC," then laughing and laughing.
Estimated Value $200 - 250.
