Lot 3072

Kingdom of Thrace. Koson, died c. 29 BC. Gold Stater (8.45 g) minted c. 40-29 BC. Consul between lictors, all togate, advancing left. Reverse: Eagle standing left on scepter, holding wreath in one claw. SNG Cop 123; Dewing 1245. Lustrous. Superb Extremely Fine.

The model for the obverse of this gold stater is the reverse of a silver denarius minted by Brutus as moneyer, c. 54 BC. Koson was an ally of Brutus, so the familiar hats-off type was chosen; Koson certainly selected the wrong partisan!
Estimated Value $600 - 700.
