Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 87

Lot 2597

Isle of Man. Proof Five Pounds, 1965. Fr-1; KM-17a. Weight 1.2587 ounces. Struck in .980 fine gold. Obverse, detailed portrait of HM Queen Elizabeth II by H Paget. Reverse, arms of Man. A beautifully frosted Proof in pristine mint state. NGC graded Proof 63.

* Only 1000 examples of this coin were made as Proofs (struck at the Royal Mint) and therefore this is one of the rarest British Five Pound coins. Many of these pieces were scuffed or hairlined. 50 years ago it was not standard practice to package Proof coins in plastic capsules and the 1965 £5 IOM gold coins were often slightly damaged. This is an unusually nice specimen.
Estimated Value $1,700 - 1,900.
