von Richthofen, Mannfred, Freiherr [Baron] (1892-1918) German fighter pilot, the most successful flying ace of World War I. He flew a red Fokker Dr. I triplane and was known to the Germans as "Der Rote Kampfflieger," to the French as "le Diable Rouge" and to the English-speaking world as "The Red Baron." He claimed 80 aerial victories before being shot down himself on April 21, 1918.

Photo by C.J. von Dühren. Printed at the top edge is "Unser erfolgreichster Kampf=Flieger / Freiherr von Richthofen" [Our most successful fighter pilot. Baron von Richthofen]. A handsome, waist-length portrait signed two months and three days before his death.
