Lot 245

1796 S-89 R3 Liberty Cap PCGS graded VF35. Mostly glossy dark steel brown and chocolate. The surfaces appear to be perfectly smooth and the eye appeal is excellent, but a strong glass reveals uniform extremely faint roughness. No verdigris and only a few minor contact marks. The best identifying mark is a small rim nick at the T in UNITED. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II early, with minor die crumbling on the tip of the nose and on the lips. The date is bold and the legends are strong. Called VF20 and tied for CC#9 in the Bland census. Noyes says VF30 net VF20 and tied for CC#5, his photo #23180. Our grade is VF25 sharpness net VF20. The attribution and Husak-Heard provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 3 in VF; 2 finer for the variety. PCGS #35774. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP
