France. Ecu d'or du Dauphine, ND. Fr-357. Francis I, 1515-1547. Arms of France and Dauphine. Reverse; Cross. With unusually fine surfaces and great clarity of detail. NGC graded MS-61 Gold Sticker. WINGS Approved.

* Francis I was King of France from 1515. He succeeded his cousin Louis XII and from 1519 European politics turned on the rivalry between Francis and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V which led to several wars. Francis was defeated in 1525, captured at Pavia and only released after he agreed to sign a humiliating treaty. Domestically, however, he developed absolute power as a monarch.
