Byzantine Empire. Andronicus I, 1183-1185. Billon Aspron Trachy Nomisma (4.49g), Constantinople. The Virgin, nimbate, stg. facing on footstool, holding before her nimbate head. of the infant Christ. Rev. Facing stg. figures of Andronicus, with forked beard, on l., and Christ, with nimbus cr., on r., the emperor wearing divitision and loros and holding labarum and gl. cr., Christ crowning the emperor with r. hand and holding book of Gospels in l. DOC 3b; Hendy pl. 18, 13-16; Sear 1985. Extremely Fine with dark brown patina, carefully struck and a remarkably well-preserved example of this denomination, very rare thus.
