Byzantine Empire. Manuel I, 1143-1180. Electrum Aspron Trachy Nomisma (4.3g), Thessalonica. 1160-67. The Virgin, nimbate, seated facing on backless throne, holding before her circular medallion with the bust of the infant Christ. Rev. Facing stg. figures of Manuel, on l., and St. Demetrius, on r., holding between them labarum with long shaft, the emperor wearing crown, divitision and chlamys and holding akakia in r. hand, the saint nimbate and in military attire. DOC 9; Hendy pl. 14, 7-9; Sear 1974. Good Extremely Fine, an unusually sharp striking.
