Byzantine Empire. Nicephorus III Botaniates, 1078-1081. Silver Miliaresion (2g), Constantinople. Cross crosslet on globus resting on three steps, with X at center and pellet within crescent on shaft, facing crowned busts of Nicephorus, wearing jeweled chlamys, on l., and Maria, wearing loros, on r., triple border. Rev. Inscription of Nicephorus and Maria in five lines across field, triple border. DOC 6; Sear 1886. Good fine and extremely rare, possibly the best surviving specimen (those in Berlin and Dumbarton Oaks being much inferior).
