German States - Hesse-Cassel. Edder Gold Ducat, 1775. Fr-1284; Schütz-1933; KM-513; Hoffm.2449. Friedrich II, 1760-1785. Armored bust right. Reverse River God with Spring urn with Hessian coat of arms on the banks of the Eder. Date in Roman numerals MDCCLXXV below and Altenburg Castle in the background. A lovely original lustrous example. Extremely Rare. NGC graded AU-58.

The Eder River in northern Hesse runs for 110 miles. It has been mined for Gold with limited success. Yet enough Gold was found to produce a small number of coins. The appearance of a river god on the coin is a mythological statement thanking the god for his bounty of gold in the river.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.
David Cassel Collection.
