Lot 221

1847 N-24 R1 MS62+. Lustrous light olive and bluish steel brown. The only defects, and they are barely visible, are a very faint horizontal hairline scratch in the field off the chin and a small spot of darker toning under the second T in STATES and another under the O in OF. A good identifying mark is a small area of weakness at the root of the dentils over the first T in STATES, as struck. Excellent eye appeal, very close to MS63. LDS, die state d early (Newcomb's old #9). There are fine die cracks at OF, ME, and IC, but the ones at TE in STATES and down through the O in OF have not formed. The die lines from the inner curl are short and barely visible but the small clashmark on the chin still shows. Comes with a great provenance. DWH #2400.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Howard R. Newcomb-Floyd T. Starr, Stack's 6/13/84:510-R. S. Brown, Jr., Superior 9/30/86:1084-R. E. Naftzger, Jr. (via Bill Noyes) 3/10/04.
