Lot 21

1838 Coronet Head Cent. MS-64 Brown. Some blue and red colors. A very attractive coin. Although the stars are bluntly struck (as is the surrounding denticle border) the central head of Liberty is crisply defined and very attractive. So bold is it that her ear outline shows completely.

An historic note: The "Underground Railroad" was in full swing in 1838. The Railroad provided escape routes for runaway Southern slaves to the Northern States and then on to Canada. Fourteen Northern States set up operations. It was most active in the Western Reserve of northern Ohio, starting there as early as 1790. Contrary to general opinion, the Railroad actually had little effect, since only 500 to 1,000 slaves fled North each year.
Estimated Value $400 - 440.

Realized $575
