Lot 2031

1916-D Mercury Dime. NGC graded MS-65 Full Bands. Well struck and a nice untoned coin. The powerfully struck, lustrous surfaces are readily appreciable at all angles on this key date '16-D Mercury dime. This is an important issue among collectors of Gem quality date and mint mark issues. No one can honestly deny the vibrancy of the surfaces, that is a given. The near-superb quality, too, shows in the fully struck devices exhibiting fine detail to all the high points of the hair and wing, fasces, diagonals, and cross bands. Only 264,000 were minted. Pop 23; 7 finer; 5 in 66; 2 in 67. (PCGS # 4907) .

Historic note: A. A. Weinman designed a dime in which the obverse was a winged head of Liberty derived from the denarii of Ancient Rome. The designer explained that "the wings crowning her cap of Liberty are intended to symbolize liberty of thought." He selected "the fasces and olive branch to symbolize the strength which lies in unity, while the battle-ax stands for preparedness to defend the union. The branch of olive is symbolical of our love of peace."
Estimated Value $28,000 - 30,000.

Realized $40,250
