Lot 193

1847 N-8 R3 MS62+. Mint red fading to light steel brown, more than a third of the red remaining, mostly on the reverse. Would rate a slightly higher grade except for a half dozen small spots of darker olive toning (not carbon) around the earlobe and a speck of light carbon on the upper left point of star 10. M-LDS, die state c, with a small but clear rim cud break at AM. Tied for CC#5 overall but finest by a small margin among only 6 known with the single reverse die cud. This cent is plated inside the front cover of the second edition (1987) of the Grellman book on late date cents. (See the lot description of the second 1845 N-4 in this sale for the story about the cents plated inside the covers of the 1987 edition.) DWH #1839.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
