Lot 19

1794 C-8 R5. Fine-15 Plus. Sharpness 5 points better but there is a reddish chocolate brown stain on the cap extending down into the curls below, plus another small splash of this toning at BER, and these stained areas contain traces of extremely fine roughness. The remainder of the planchet is smooth and offers excellent eye appeal. No verdigris and only a few trivial contact marks, including a pair of small overlapping nicks in the field close before the eye and a tiny rim nick at the M in AMERICA. Frosty dark olive and steel with the splashes of reddish chocolate toning on the obverse already mentioned. LDS, Manley state 2.0 late, with the reverse rotated 20 degrees CCW. The die crack down through the second T in STATES is strong and reaches the top of the L in HALF. This piece is plated in the second edition of the Cohen half cent book to illustrate the variety and in the Breen encyclopedia to illustrate his die state IV. Weight 100.1 grains.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 7,000.
