n.d. (1853) Dollar Octagonal Liberty. BG-501. Low Rarity 5. PCGS graded AU-58 PQ. Popular Eagle with scroll reverse. Well struck and prooflike with lovely golden sunset toning.

Issued by the firm Frontier & Deviercy, the obverse displays a large Liberty head with 13 stars around. On the reverse, a large eagle in the fashion of the U.S. Assay Office territorials, with the eagle holding a branch, shield, arrows, and scroll. CALIFORNIA GOLD. above, ONE.DOL. below. On all of these large eagle types the edge reeding is crude and irregular, probably made by hand to keep the weight down to Frontier's standard, according to Breen-Gillio Pop 16; 13 finer, 2 in 60, 2 in 61, 4 in 62, 5 in 63 (PCGS # 10478) .
