Lot 1800

1905 $20 Liberty. NGC graded MS-63. Only 58,919 minted. A very rare date in high grades of Mint State. Light golden toning, frosty luster; there is a small mark on the upper lip and another in the field close by the nose, both of them minor as are the few other little abrasions consistent with MS63 quality. Pop 10; 1 finer in 64 (PCGS # 9047) .

Coming off record mintage in 1904 (and for that matter, 1904-S), the Philadelphia Mint went on hiatus in 1905 when coinage of $20 gold plummeted. It left the bulk of coining this denomination to San Francisco to do, while attending to other matters. Philadelphia would recover again in 1907, but 1906, too, saw low mintage.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.

Realized $10,925
