Lot 1609

The "King" in Choice Proof. PCGS graded Proof 63. Lovely cameoed cheek and frosted eagle on this, the much-coveted "king" of Morgans. Proof-only issue, of course--880 struck. The mythological 12,000 reported business strikes have never surfaced and probably represent nothing but an error in the Philadelphia Mint's coinage log for the year, or more likely melted under the Pittman Act of 1918. The fields on this handsome specimen are an elegant bluish gray, or lilac gold, or some other iridescent but subtle variant, depending upon how you hold the coin against the light. Beneath this color the mirrors are deep as a well, adding immeasurably to its eye appeal. If you make the winning bid, you won't regret it or ever tire of looking at this specimen.

Realized $20,988
