Lot 1549

1917-S Liberty Walking Half Dollar. Mint mark on obverse. NGC graded MS-64. Mostly white with a hint of light gold toning. Bright fresh surface and color with careful preservation allowing it to still light up the surfaces of this well struck and appealing coin. Mint authorities knew well that the Weinman design of 1916, despite its great artistic merits, no matter how thorough engraver Charles Barber's original attempts to reduce relief, was technically unsatisfactory in a few areas where high points of the design fell opposite one another: Liberty's head and hand, the upper thigh, and the eagle's central body. Just the same, this 1917-S mostly overcomes the weakness in these areas. Pop 123; 15 in 65; 1 in 66; 1 in 67.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.
