Lot 1400

1834. Plain 4. PCGS graded MS-62. An intensely lustrous example loaded with choice eye-appeal. A premium example for the grade and worth a bold bid to capture this elegant coin. The strike is sharp on the stars and the eagle but a touch of softness is noted on the curl over Liberty's ear, common to this design. After making a modest adjustment to the amount of gold in the planchets early in 1834, this finally brought the melt value of these half eagles below the face value. Hence they circulated! After years of all gold coinage being sucked out of the economy to be melted this was real progress. These half eagles are highly collectible and often found in gently circulated grades, and best of all near the choice level like this one. Clearly a coin with a lot to offer the collector (PCGS # 8171) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,400.
