Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 2

Lot 1397

1879. PCGS graded Proof 65. A vibrant gem Proof here that is graced with a delicate blush of gold toning. The strike is full and complete, the fragile fields are virtually free of all but the faintest hairlines or contact marks, earning the "65" gem grade from the PCGS grading gauntlet. After thirteen years of grading, an immense storehouse of information has been gathered in the form of the Population Reports which demonstrate that about one-half of the total minted have been submitted for grading (both to PCGS and NGC). This assumes that some coins have never been submitted, and assuming that an approximately equal number have been submitted more than once, we find that both services have graded 699 1879 Proof Trade Dollars, or just under one-half the original mintage of 1,541. Of these a total of 136 have been graded Proof 65 or higher by both services, or less than ten percent of the original mintage. Considering that Proofs were struck for collectors, this demonstrates how truly rare "Gems" are today. If you are an investor, be sure to consider rarity and condition before you invest.
