Lot 1232

1883. NGC graded Proof 68. Lovely golden toning. Only 6,609 minted. Sometimes, the greatest gifts come in diminutive packages. Such is the case with this magnificent three-cent nickel. Although the reported Proof total was high, the proper number of surviving gems clearly must be smaller than many would suppose. The same population reports that researchers use to determine the mintage also confirm the rarity of this issue in extraordinary states of preservation. Nickel-gray toning covers the obverse with a halo of gold along the perimeter. The reverse has similar appearance and a superb bold Roman numeral III that adds heat to the importance. The mirrors are as deep as one will find on a three-cent nickel piece while the devices show an appreciable amount of delicate frost on them. The design elements in addition to the III show an exquisite strike, and no areas reveal hints of weakness. Pop 4; none finer at NGC .
Estimated Value $3,800 - 4,000.
