Commodus, 177-192 A.D. Gold aureus (7.27 g) struck at Rome 186-189 A.D. Extremely rare: possibly only the third recorded specimen.. Mature laureate bust of Commodus right, with light drapery on left shoulder. Reverse: VICTO RIAE FELICI. Victory, with turreted headdress, flying left, holding in both hands an untied diadem above two oval shields, tablet inscribed CVPP below. This type recorded only in silver in all the major works of reference: cf. RIC III, p. 387, 196; BMCRE IV, p. 732, 240; and Cohen III, p. 350, 952. For another specimen of the aureus, from the same reverse die, see Coin Hoards I Royal Numismatic Society, London, 1976, p. 66 fig. 15, 6; another, from different dies, in Ars Classica Auction XVI, Geneva, 1933, lot 1927. Superb Mint State.
