Lot 1172

1860-D $5 Liberty. Medium D. NGC graded AU-58. Well struck with some mint luster. An exceptional example of this classic scarce date, one of just 14,635 minted. Rich, satiny yellow gold luster with the fewest abrasions possible for the choice grade. For comparison, the stellar Harry Bass set of half eagles contained an 1860-D that had a lamination on it, showing how difficult a time he had obtaining one that was nicer. Quite sharply struck including stars 1 and 2 which often lack detail; detail definitely is lacking on the eagle's neck, this not being unusual for the variety. Despite the low mintage, this high-grade 1860-D half eagle has some company at this and higher level. Pop 35; 12 finer. (PCGS # 8286) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 7,000.

Realized $7,188
