1867 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. NGC graded Proof 66. It's interesting to see how time plays its wiles on coinage metals. In this case, it has cast upon the mirrored silver (alloyed and minted at the beginning of our Reconstruction period) a deep mauve, largely obscuring the design but valued, nonetheless, for its originality. This is doubtless a Gem example. Regarding the Population Reports, evidently only about 20% of the mintage of Proof half dollars of 1867 have survived in nice enough condition to warrant review by the certifiers. This one will appeal to a wide audience and is worth a strong bid.
