Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 286
1794 S-44 R1 PCGS graded AU58. Very attractive glossy medium chocolate brown. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. The sharpness of this cent is very close to mint state but there are a few small contact marks in the field under LIB, a few more tiny ones under the Y in LIBERTY, and several more on the cheek and neck. None of these marks is significant in its own right but there are too many to ignore. The reverse is flawless and offers mint state eye appeal. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state III early. Both dies are cracked, and the radial crack of star III reaches down to the wreath stem but goes no farther. Our grade is AU55 sharpness net AU50. Noyes says AU55 sharpness net EF45 and tied for CC#2, his photo #38778. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#2 in his condition census. Both sides of this cent are plated in the 1923 and 1926 Chapman references on the cents of 1794. A sharp, attractive cent in spite of the tiny marks. Estimate Value $10,000 - UP

1794 S-45 R5+ VG8. Slightly sharper with about a dozen tiny but sharp rim nicks around the reverse. The surfaces are mostly smooth and glossy but there is some microscopic roughness in the fields and protected areas, mostly on the reverse. No verdigris, and the best identifying marks are a tiny tick in the field over the end of the pole, another on the rim over the end of the pole, a dull rim nick or tiny rim bruise over the U in UNITED, and a rim nick over the second A in AMERICA. None of the marks is distracting and this cent offers nice eye appeal for the grade. EDS, Breen state I. The diagonal die flaws through the O in ONE and CE in CENT are clear but the reverse is uncracked. Graded VG10 net VG7 and tied for CC#15 in the Noyes census, his photo #30907. The obverse of this cent is plated in the 1979 Tom Morley book on grading 1794 cents to illustrate the VG8 grade for this obverse die. Comes with a nice provenance. Estimate Value $2,000 - UP

1794 S-46 R3 F12+. Rather glossy light olive and steel brown blending to medium chocolate in protected areas. The details are a bit sharper, close to VF20, but the planchet has a very subtle bend causing the hair right of the cap to be slightly raised and the opposing area under CENT slightly sunken. However there is no evidence of damage that might have caused a bend, and the cent offers very nice eye appeal for the grade. The surfaces appear perfectly smooth but a glass reveals extremely faint roughness in the fields and protected areas. The best identifying marks are a tiny radial scratch along the left edge of the E in LIBERTY, a small patch of microscopic roughness at the dentil tips left of the first S in STATES, and a collection of microscopic hairlines over the N in ONE. None of these defects is visible to the unaided eye. EDS, Breen state I, with a die crack from the dentils into the bust and up to the neck where it fades away. The date and legends are all bold. 1794 S-46 R3 VG8. Slightly sharper but there are areas of minor roughness on the obverse, particularly on the bust and in the surrounding fields. Specks of greenish verdigris are visible around the bust and there are several light rim bruises on the reverse. Good identifying marks would be rim bruises at UN, the A in STATES, and the E in AMERICA. Mostly glossy medium steel and chocolate brown with a bit of reddish chocolate toning in the rough area around the bust. The date and legends are complete and strong. LDS, Breen state V. The die cracks on the obverse are bold and a piece of the die has fallen away at the top of the 4 causing an internal cud that joins that numeral to the bust. A neat die state. 1794 S-47 R4 F15+. Sharpness VF20 but there is a dull nick or small dent hidden in the hair at the back of the head. Otherwise this cent is quite attractive and the eye appeal is excellent. The other notable defects are a few minor marks on the jawline, a collection of tiny planchet flakes in the field before the neck, a trio of microscopic pinpricks between the second A in AMERICA and the adjacent ribbon, and a half dozen more around UN. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate with slightly darker reddish chocolate toning in protected areas. EDS, Breen state I. The repunching on LI is clear and fine die clashmarks show on the obverse. A fine double profile shows on most of the face from the forehead down to the chin. The repunching on LI and obverse clashmarks are faint or missing and there are no die cracks visible on the reverse. 1794 S-48 R5 Starred Reverse PCGS graded G6. Rather glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel. The highpoints are smooth but minor roughness covers the fields and protected areas on both sides, strongest at RTY. No verdigris, and the best identifying mark is a small chip or shallow pit under the right edge of the ear lobe. The obverse is sharper than the reverse, as usual for this variety. The date is easily readable (although the 4 is a bit weak) and a third of the tiny stars are still visible. Noyes says G5 and tied for CC#23, his photo #34778. Our grade is net G5+. Only the first scratch is significant; the other two are trivial. Very attractive glossy light olive brown and steel. No roughness or verdigris. EDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die cracked. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown, the reverse a shade or two lighter than the obverse. The date and legends are complete and clear. EDS, Breen state I, before any die cracks. The crack from the rim right of the 9 to the shoulder loop is clear and the area outside the crack at the bottom of the reverse is clearly raised as a retained cud, highest on the right end at the A. A great die state, possibly a unique intermediate stage of the progression. Removed from a PCGS slab graded VF20 (PCGS label #1365.20/4902113 included, and the label incorrectly identifies this as a "Head of 1795" type). Estimate Value $1,500 - UP

1794 S-60 R3 VF25+. Sharpness VF35 but lightly cleaned and very nicely retoned glossy light to medium chocolate brown. There are a half dozen small rim nicks on the upper half of the obverse, mostly over LIBERTY, and a couple very light rim bruises on the reverse, but none of the marks is significant or distracting. There are numerous tiny pre-striking planchet chips at the top of the obverse and the opposing area at the bottom of the reverse, the result of a slight axial misalignment of the dies (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). M-LDS, Breen state IV early. There is a fine radial die crack up from a dentil left of the date but it does not reach the curl above. The reverse is not rotated (many in this die state show a 30-40 degree clockwise rotation). The usual die clashmarks are strong on both sides. This cent is plated in the 1879 Frossard monograph on early United States cents and half cents, and it is also plated in the Al Boka reference that traces the provenances of condition census examples of 1794 cent varieties. Graded XF40 net VF25 and tied for CC#14 in the Noyes census, his photo #28007. An important cent that comes with a long provenance that includes several prominent collectors. 1794 S-61 R4 G6. Rather glossy steel brown blending to olive brown in protected areas. Mostly smooth but there is fine granularity in the fields and protected areas on the reverse. There are a few nicks under the ear lobe and a couple more in the curls left of the date, none significant. Nothing special except that there are many curious "reeding" marks on the edge mixed in with the usual edge lettering. These marks are not uniform and (in our opinion) were added post-striking although some of them look like the real thing. Estimate Value $300 - UP

1794 S-62 R4+ F15+. Five points sharper but very fine verdigris or crud covers the protected areas on the reverse. The only notable mark is a scrape or chip out of the rim over the I in AMERICA. Some have suggested this may be an ejection mark from the Castaing machine or some other pre-striking damage, and it is not distracting. The obverse is nice, void of any defects, and it offers excellent eye appeal. Mostly glossy dark olive brown and chocolate with lighter steel brown toning on the highpoints. The date and legends are strong. Rare EDS, Breen state I, before the large cud break left of the bottom of the cap. While this cent is not in the overall condition census for the variety, it is among the finest of those known in the early die state. Otherwise this cent is beautiful, nearly choice except for a shallow planchet delamination that reaches from the bottom of the ribbon bow through the second A in AMERICA to the dentils above. Attractive glossy medium chocolate brown and olive with a slight reddish chocolate tone in the smoothed area on the cheek and neck. Terminal die state, Breen state V, with a strong die crack that bisects the obverse and bold die clashmarks before the neck. An important cent that has been assigned grades ranging from net F12 to EF40 by various experts over the decades. This cent is plated in numerous important references including the 1893 Frossard-Hays reference on 1794 cents, the 1910 Elder-Gilbert reference, Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy, and in the Morley grading guide for 1794 cents (where it illustrates the EF40 grade for the variety). The edge was marked "NEW VAR 55 55 PHS" by William Hays to identify this as a new variety #55.
