1848 N-20 R3- Repunched 48 MS60. Glossy golden light olive brown and tan. Possibly dipped long ago but the surfaces are lustrous and eye appeal is excellent. The notable marks are a tiny nick over the I in LIBERTY and a very tiny rim nick at the I in UNITED, plus an extremely faint lamination in the field close under star 4, as struck. MDS, die state b. The repunching on the 48 remains sharp but the tops of C & E in CENT are joined by crumbling. Tied for CC#5 with several other examples in the Grellman census. Comes with a nice provenance. The surfaces are smooth and attractive, the only defect of note being a small punch mark in the center of star 6. EDS, die state a. The die lines are sharp and the horizontal line inside the O in OF has not formed. Our grade is EF40. Not in the overall condition census for the variety but one of the finest known for the early die state. And it comes with a nice provenance. 1849 N-9 R3+ PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Frosty bluish steel brown with 10% of the mint red remaining on the obverse, 20% on the reverse. No spots or stains, only very light contact marks, mostly in the obverse fields. The notable marks are a couple very faint nicks in the field between stars 12 & 13, a couple more in the field off the chin, and a tiny planchet chip just left of the notch on the let side of the 8, as struck. M-LDS, die state f, with several areas of crumbling on the reverse, including small crumbles on the lower right of berry 5 (the berry under the first S in STATES). Our grade is MS60+. CC#2 for this tough die variety, and only two mint state examples are listed in the Grellman census. The attribution and Fricke provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Sharply struck VEDS, die state a early. The die lines at the E in ONE and NT in CENT are sharp. A neat die state. The vertical lines at star 4 are strong but the earlier diagonal lines around the date are gone. The repunching at the base of the first 1 is sharp. Can't see why this one didn't get an "RB" designation from PCGS. No spots or notable signs of contact. LDS, die state b. The die line at the throat and the ones at the inner curl are gone. The dies are worn and the top of the 8 is weak. A very attractive example, close to gem quality. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#7 in the Grellman census. 1851/81 N-3 R1 Overdate 51 over Inverted 18 AU55. A sharp mint state cent that was dipped and has retoned frosty light olive and steel on the lower left half of the obverse while the remainder of the coin is very faded red blending to steel brown. There are a few small puffs of slightly darker toning around stars 1 & 2 but no contact marks or other defects. Sharply struck EDS, die state a, with sharp horizontal die lines in the field around the date. The 51 over inverted 18 feature is obvious. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS63RB (NGC label #1585199-004). Estimate Value $500 - UP

The only defects are an extremely faint hairline on the jaw, another at the top of the neck, and some extremely tiny specks of darker toning sprinkled over both sides. None of these marks is visible without the aid of a glass and this cent offers great eye appeal. M-LDS, die state b, with a radial die crack from the dentils through the junction of the T & E in UNITED to the wreath below. The reverse is rotated 45 degrees CCW from the normal head-to-foot die orientation. Our grade is MS62. The attribution and Fricke provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Choice except for a few small spots of darker toning, including a tiny one in the center of the cheek, a slightly larger one in the field over the head, and a third between star 8 and the dentils. The reverse is flawless except for a very shallow low spot under CENT, as struck. LDS die state b. The repunching inside the triangle of the 4 is dull but still visible and the die lines over NI in UNITED are gone. Our grade is MS62. MDS, die state b. The point down from the inner hair bun is clear. A great example of the final year of Large Cent production. Our grade is MS64. The set includes 1794 (2), 1795, 1796 (2 scarce varieties: S-88 and S-116), 1797, 1798 (4 pieces including 3 with Style I Hair), 1800/79, 1801, 1802 (2), 1803 (3), 1807 (2: an S-271 Comet Obverse and S-273 Overdate Large 7 over 6). Some are slightly sharper with minor defects but all have a readable date. Peeps of very faded mint color show in protected areas on both sides. The surfaces are satiny and nearly flawless. A tiny planchet flake on the rim at star 5 and a microscopic diagonal tick left of star 11 are the best identifying marks, and they are barely visible. M-LDS, die state b.
