The Patrons Saints of Austria, 1515 (1906), Engraving. Fine, clear impression of very scarce engraving by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) with hand printed titling in fountain pen ink at lower margin decades ago. Originally the block contained only six saints. The two at the right, Saints Otto and Poppo were added, probably in 1517, when Poppo's grave was opened during the visit of the Emperor Maximilian to Trier. It is a mark of the flexibility of woodcut technique that an additional block could be cut and fastened to the original and the whole printed as one. The two additional saints are not by Dürer but probably by his student Hans Springinklee. The six original figures, by Dürer, are, from the left, Quirinus, Maximilian, Florian, Severinus, Coloman and Leopold. Handomely mounted and framed to 17 x 22, some scuff on right side of frame. $300 - 500
