Lot 301
1853 N-2 R3 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Beautiful lustrous bluish steel and olive brown with generous traces of mellowed mint red remaining visible on the obverse. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. The notable marks are a microscopic speck of verdigris low on the neck and a small carbon spot on the left side of the U in UNITED. Otherwise this cent is absolutely choice. E-MDS, die state a. The die line at the throat is dull but clear. Our grade is MS62. Second finest known of the variety behind a marginally finer example in the Grellman census. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $650-UP

1853 N-3 R1 Repunched 185 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Lustrous mint red toning to bluish steel brown and light olive, about a third of the mellowed mint color remaining. A very attractive cent but there are a few trivial defects, including a spot of darker toning at ER in LIBERTY, a couple light horizontal nicks on the rim left of star 5, and weak dentils between stars 3 & 4 (as struck). MDS, die state b. The fine repunching on the 185 found in the early state is gone but the lump under the 5 remains visible. Our grade is MS62, tied for CC#12 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 5; 2 finer, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $500-UP

1853 N-4 R3+ Boldly Repunched 3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Attractive glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas and the eye appeal is excellent. Would rate a higher grade if not for a few contact marks, including a small but fresh nick at the upper right point of star 2 and several contact marks that break the toning around NE in ONE. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The repunching over the 3 is strong and the fine die lines over the N in UNITED are sharp. Our grade is EF45+, tied for CC#7 overall but second finest of the EDS in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 64 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $350-UP

1853 N-5 R2 Repunched 53 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Light to medium chocolate brown. No marks or other defects, but the luster is hidden under a thin layer of natural oxidation. This piece appears to have been untouched for many decades and shallow dirt is nestled around all the devices. Needs a proper bath to bring out the underlying beauty. The best identifying mark is a small spot of darker toning left of the lower left point of star 11 and another midway between star 2 and the chin. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state a. The fine repunching under the 3 is visible in spite of the dirt, and the fine die lines from the inner curl are present. Our grade is AU50. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 65 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $200-UP

The only mark is a dark olive brown spot of microscopic roughness at the dentils over the F in OF. LDS, die state b. The tiny die lines from the dentils at star 13 are gone and a strong flowline connects the left end of the base of the 1 to the dentil below. Estimated Value $125-UP

1853 N-31 R4+ AU50. Sharpness very close to mint state but lightly cleaned and retoned glossy olive and medium chocolate with frosty lighter steel brown in protected areas on the reverse. The toning on the neck is lighter than the rest of the obverse, and this is a distraction. In addition there is a small, very shallow planchet flake near the center of the lightly toned area on the neck. A more-uniform retoning might be beneficial. Nicely struck E-MDS, die state b early. The diagonal die lines over RI in AMERICA are dull but visible and the field outside the wreath is starting to show minor die roughness. A variety that is difficult to find in high grade. Tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. Estimated Value $250-UP

1854 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. The so-called "Dartboard Obverse" variety. Frosty uniform steel brown and light chocolate with peeps of mint red showing on both sides. Lustrous and very attractive, nearly void of marks. The only defect is a faint spot of slightly darker toning under the left point of star 5. LDS, die state c.
