Lot 204
1849 N-30 R5 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Lustrous light olive and steel brown with darker steel overtones, especially on the obverse. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective. This is a sharply struck mint state cent that has several carbon spots on both sides, the largest of these at the dentils over star 11 and under the tip of the wreath stem. The only signs of contact are a very light rim bruise right of star 9 and another over the I in AMERICA. EDS, die state a, without any crumbling inside the top of the N in ONE. Several examples of this variety were called proof strikes by Breen and Loring (Breen incorrectly called them early strikes of N-1), and NGC has even certified a few as proofs. In Grellman's opinion, all N-30 examples are business strikes and only the early strikes exhibit reflective fields. But the sharpness and eye appeal of the early strikes are outstanding. Our grade is MS60 sharpness net AU55, tied for CC#6 of this rare die variety in the Grellman census. The finest is a prooflike gem that resides in the ANS collection. Comes with a nice provenance. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $2,500-UP

1850 N-26 R4 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous mint red fading to bluish steel and light olive, about half the obverse showing faded mint color and the reverse displaying underlying very faded mint color in the fields and protected areas. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective thanks to freshly polished dies. This cent would rate gem status if not for a carbon spot nestled between the upper left points of star 5. Otherwise there are only a few minor spots on the obverse and the reverse is pristine. E-MDS, die state b early. The die line above UN reaches to over the center of the N where it fades out. A beautiful example of this tough variety. Noyes photo #30466. Our grade is MS64, tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer for the variety and the only example graded MSRB at PCGS. Estimated Value $1,500-UP

1850 N-27 R4 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Lustrous steel and light olive brown with nearly a third of the mint red remaining, mostly on the obverse. A spot of reddish chocolate toning over star 9, another at the dentils under the right side of the 8 in the date, and a third on the bust tip are the notable marks, and they do catch your eye. There are a few other smaller spots of dark toning elsewhere on the obverse, but they are not significant. The reverse is choice, nearly flawless. E-MDS, die state a (there is no state b for this variety). The fields on both sides are covered with satiny frost created by microscopic die flowlines. Noyes photo #29938. Our grade is MS62, CC#2 in the Grellman census. Both census takers list only 2 examples in mint state grades, and the next best grades only AU50. An important cent for advanced collectors of die varieties. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; tied for finest graded of the variety at PCGS.
