1848 N-21 R3- PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown. Very attractive lustrous mint red just starting to fade to steel brown on the highpoints, about 80% of the mint red remaining (90% on the obverse, 70% on the reverse). Has to be very close to an "RD" designation. The only marks are some microscopic specks of dark toning scattered over the obverse. A speck between the 1 & 8 and another directly under the 1 are good identifying marks, but it takes a glass to see them. M-LDS, die state d. The tops of the C & E in CENT are joined by crumbling and the field outside the wreath is starting to rise around the legend, but the vertical die lines right of the T in CENT are still clear. This is a gem cent that offers outstanding eye appeal. Our grade is MS65, finest known for the variety in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $2,000-UP

1848 N-23 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Beautiful light olive brown with delicate overtones of bluish steel. About 10% of the faded mint color remains visible, mostly on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and lustrous offering outstanding eye appeal. The only identifying mark is a tiny, barely visible horizontal planchet chip over the nostril, as struck. M-LDS, die state b. The die line from the first S in STATES to the E in CENT is mostly gone, only a faint remnant from the bottom of the O in ONE to the E still visible under strong magnification. The field is starting to rise along the profile of the portrait. Called MS63 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #30556. Our grade is MS63, CC#2 in the Grellman census. 1848 N-26 R5- PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Glossy medium brown and light chocolate blending to darker chocolate and olive brown in protected areas around the devices. Frosty mint luster shows under the glossy toning in protected areas on the reverse. This cent offers outstanding eye appeal, and Ted Naftzger described the fields as "prooflike." The only mark is a tiny planchet chip in the field right of the inner curl, as struck. Very sharply struck except for minor weakness on the E in CENT, as on all of this die variety. E-MDS, die state b. The diagonal die lines at ONE and CENT are clear but they do not extend beyond those letters. Called AU50 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #30462. 1848 N-36 R5- PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Choice glossy light chocolate brown and steel with frosty luster covering the protected areas on both sides. Essentially flawless, but it is difficult to assign a higher grade due to the blunted details on the portrait caused by improper die preparation. Finding an identifying mark is a challenge; a tiny, very thin nick on the truncation above the first 8 will have to suffice for this purpose. LDS, die state b. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective thanks to a fresh die polishing that removed the earlier vertical die line under the first 8. A great example of this odd-looking die variety. 1849 N-3 R3 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Attractive lustrous chocolate and light olive brown with 25% of the mint red remaining on each side. The only notable marks are a speck of darker toning at the outer point of star 10, a few very light ticks on the cheek, and a tiny rim nick off the end of the wreath stem. None of these marks is significant and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. EDS+, die state d late, with minor crumbling on the reverse. Our grade is MS62, CC#4 for the variety but finest of the early state in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1849 N-4 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Highly lustrous light olive brown and chocolate. The only notable marks are a scrape in the dentils at TES plus a tiny rim nick at ME. Great luster and eye appeal in spite of the inconspicuous marks. MDS, die state c. The lines at UN are gone and die cracks show through the tops of UNITED and STATE. Struck on an oversize planchet (164.2 grains and a full 28.0 millimeters). Fewer than a dozen of these "fatboys" are known, although others probably exist. Apparently a small group of planchets were cut using a punch of slightly larger diameter, and these planchets were used to strike some MDS examples of N-4. The heaviest of these weighs 173.9 grains. The slightly oversize diameter and resulting broad rims give them away, but these features are easy to miss unless you are looking at a stack of cents where the larger diameter "sticks out." Our grade is MS60. Not in the overall condition census for the variety, but second finest known of the 10 "Fatboys" currently traced. Comes with a very nice provenance. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 4 finer, 3 in 65, 1 in 66 for the variety at PCGS. Estimated Value $1,000-UP

1849 N-8 R2 Repunched 9 or 9 over 8 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Highly lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with hints of bluish steel brown overtone. Peeps of faded mint color can be found on both sides. There is a small spot of carbon in the dentils over star 2 and a smaller one in the dentils over star 8. Otherwise this cent is choice. EDS, die state b, with die lines at the dentils from star 2 to star 4, the reverse die crack faint (state a, with an uncracked reverse, is unknown and may not exist), and the rims are beveled. The repunching at the bottom right of the 9 is sharp. This may be a real overdate 9 over 8, but it may be a repunched 9 as well. The double die reverse feature is obvious. This is a very attractive cent. Our grade is MS62, CC#7 overall and second finest of the early die state in the Grellman census. The attribution and Iskra provenance are noted on the PCGS label. 1849 N-25 R7 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. Attractive glossy light to medium chocolate and steel brown with traces of mint red showing in protected areas on both sides. There is the faintest hint of friction on the highest points of the design, but the surfaces are nearly flawless and the eye appeal is solidly mint state. The only marks are a tiny diagonal nick right of the upper lip, a very faint spot of darker chocolate toning in the field under the tip of the chin, and a speck of dark toning over the O in ONE. This cent is quite attractive in its own right, but it is highly significant for other reasons. Newcomb used this cent to identify the N-25 die variety in his attribution guide for the series, and it remained the only known example for many years thereafter. Later Jules Reiver came to the conclusion that N-25 was merely a die state of N-10, and the variety was delisted. Your cataloger, while studying the Naftzger collection in 1989 (re)discovered that this cent was indeed a separate die variety. The obverse may be an early state of the N-10 obverse (which is doubtful), but the reverse is certainly not from the N-10 marriage. Both of the N-25 dies are new and display sharp die finishing lines, but they have uneven fields with strong crumbling around many of the stars and severe die erosion at ERICA. Ted Naftzger disagreed with those who saw this as merely a die state of N-10, and he continued to support Newcomb's conclusion. Only 8 examples are known, and this is clearly the finest of that small group. Obviously these clearly inferior dies were quickly retired. Called AU55 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #30627. Our grade is AU58+, CC#1 in the Grellman census. This cent is the highlight of the Iskra Collection and it is one of the most significant cents in the entire series of late date large cents (1840-1857). And it comes with a nice provenance, as you would expect. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer for the variety and the only MS example at PCGS. Estimated Value $25,000-UP
