Lot 51		1844 N-6 R3+ PCGS graded AU58. Glossy chocolate brown and olive with generous traces of faded mint red remaining on both sides. No spots or stains. The only marks are two diagonal nicks in the field between star 12 and the main curl and another between stars 6 & 7. EDS, die state a, with smooth, slightly reflective fields on both sides. The die lines at the throat and chin are sharp and the reverse is uncracked. The strike is better than most of this variety, but it does have softness at the ear, coronet tip, and many of the upper stars. A properly struck example of the variety is unknown to Grellman. Perhaps the strike softness resulted in the grade assessment by PCGS. Nonetheless, our grade is MS60, tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. Noyes photo #30306. Lot 52		1844 N-7 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Attractive frosty light chocolate brown and steel. Satiny mint luster covers the fields and this cent is essentially flawless. A dull, light nick on the front edge of the neck is the only mark, and it is trivial. EDS, die state a, before any die cracks or rim cuds. Our grade is MS60, tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. Lot 53		1845 N-1 R4 PCGS graded AU58. Glossy medium to dark chocolate brown and steel. No spots or stains, but there are some tiny contact marks on the obverse. The notable ones are a collection of microscopic ticks between stars 1 & 2 and two nearly horizontal nicks on the jaw at the throat. LDS, die state b. The fields are slightly reflective on both sides and the tiny die lines from the dentils at star 1 have been polished off the die. A variety that is difficult to find in high grade. Lot 54		1845 N-2 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. Frosty uniform dark steel brown and olive. No spots or stains, only a few trivial ticks. A tiny diagonal nick on the jaw and two even smaller horizontal ones in the field under the chin are good identifying marks. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The lump above the N in ONE is obvious and the tiny die lines connecting the second A in AMERICA to the leaf below are present. All 13 of the stars have full radial lines. Noyes photo #36976. There are numerous tiny spots in the field before the portrait plus a couple nicks at star 2 and a nick on the left side of the O in ONE. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a late. The reverse is uncracked and microscopic radial die flowlines are starting to show at the dentil tips on that side. Our grade is EF45+, close to AU50. Lot 56		1845 N-4 R1 Repunched 5 PCGS graded MS63 Red. Frosty bright mint red starting to mellow to light steel brown on the devices with about 75% of the mint color remaining. This is a lustrous gem cent except for some microscopic specks of darker toning scattered over the obverse. The notable spots are one in the hair under star 8, another hidden at the top of the B in LIBERTY, and a tiny one over the right point of star 3. The only sign of contact is a thin, light diagonal nick in the field midway between the chin and star 1. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The reverse is uncracked and the repunching on the top of the 5 is obvious. Our grade is MS64. Tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census, and this piece has more mint color. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. No spots or stains. The only marks, and they are trivial, are a dull pinprick on the jaw left of the bottom of the earlobe and two microscopic planchet flakes in the field right of the inner curl (as struck). Lot 58		1845 N-6 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous mint red fading to light steel brown and chocolate, about half the mellowed mint color remaining. The surfaces are frosty and nearly flawless. The best identifying marks are a swipe of medium chocolate toning through the 45, a tiny planchet flake in the field before the middle of the neck, and a microscopic speck of dark toning inside the D in UNITED. Sharply struck MDS, die state c. The fine die lines are still visible but there are die clashmarks on both sides and a faint die crack passes through star 5 (but not through other stars). Lot 59		1845 N-7 R5 PCGS graded MS64 Brown, CAC Approved. Attractive glossy chocolate and light olive brown with traces of mint red remaining on the obverse, 15% of the original red showing on the reverse. This cent offers outstanding eye appeal with virtually flawless surfaces. Just a light touch of friction on the highest points of the design from mint state. EDS, die state a, the reverse as yet uncracked through MER. The repunching on the 8 & 4 is sharp. Called AU55 and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #31208. Lot 60		1845 N-8 R1 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive lustrous medium steel brown and light chocolate. No spots or stains. The notable marks are a vertical nick in the field before the nose, two small nicks in the field above the left point of star 12, and a very light scuff that barely breaks the mint frost in the center of the cheek. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The fields are prooflike on both sides and all the fine die preparation lines are clear. A beautiful cent. Our grade is MS60+. Lot 61		1845 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS64 Red & Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty mint red fading to medium steel brown. More than are third of the mint red remains visible on the obverse, 25% on the reverse. Satiny mint frost covers this cent, even the highest points of the devices, and the eye appeal is outstanding. The only marks are some microscopic specks of darker toning scattered over the obverse and traces of an old fingerprint at stars 3-5. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a late. Many of the microscopic die lines seen in the earliest state are still visible and there is a faint die crack passing through the top of NITE in addition to the earlier one at MERI. Lot 63		1845 N-11 R3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Frosty medium olive and steel brown with 5% of the mint red remaining. The only marks are a very faint spot of slightly darker toning in the field under the end of the chin and a tiny rim nick over the right top of the first T in STATES. EDS, die state a. The fields are smooth and slightly reflective and all the fine die lines are clear. The leaves under ES-OF are softly struck thanks to debris that was clogging the die in that spot. Everything else is sharply struck, and all the stars show full radial lines. The narrow rim cud from star 4 down to under star 3 is clear. Lot 64		1845 N-12 R3 PCGS graded MS63 Brown, CAC Approved. Very attractive lustrous bluish steel brown and light olive with 5-10% of the mellowed mint red remaining. The only notable defect is a small spot of very shallow reddish chocolate verdigris on the throat. The spot is not distracting and the overall eye appeal is excellent. Sharply struck LDS, die state d. There is a narrow but strong rim cud extending from star 4 down to below star 3 and fine die cracks pass through much of the reverse legend. The only other marks are a few dull microscopic ticks right of star 5, and these are barely visible under strong magnification. Rare very early die state (VEDS), die state a, with strong horizontal die lines over star 13 plus additional unlisted fine die lines elsewhere on the obverse. Lot 67		1846 N-1 R1 Small Date, Repunched 18 PCGS graded MS62 Brown. Frosty light golden olive brown and steel with a small splash of slightly darker reddish brown toning over star 10. Traces of light bluish steel and sea green overtones show in protected areas and the eye appeal of this cent is excellent. The only signs of contact are a few light nicks on the jaw. Very sharply struck M-LDS, die state c late, with clear die cracks on both sides. All the stars show complete, bold radial lines and the veins are visible in all the leaves. Lot 68		1846 N-2 R2 Small Date, Repunched 1 PCGS graded AU58, CAC Approved. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Mint frost shows in the protected areas and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. No spots or stains, only a few microscopic ticks, none notable. MDS, die state b late or c early. The repunching to the left of the 1 is still clear but there is a fine die crack through the top of OF to the dentils over the adjacent A in addition to the earlier die crack at MER. This cent offers proof that the crack at OF occurs before die lapping removed the vertical repunching left of the 1. Our grade is AU50. Lot 69		1846 N-3 R2 Small Repunched Date PCGS graded MS65 Brown, CAC Approved. Lustrous light olive brown and bluish steel with 15-20% of the mint red remaining on both sides. The only notable marks, and they are insignificant, are a tiny spot of darker toning in the field close to the throat and jaw and a pair microscopic struck-through lines: a diagonal one on the cheek right of the upper lip and a vertical one on the right end of the eyebrow (both as struck). EDS, die state a, with fine diagonal die lines connecting the lowest curl to star 13. Repunching is visible to the left of all 4 digits of the date, strongest on the 8 & 4. Noyes photo #37499. The notable marks are a thin diagonal nick on the chin and a few light contact marks in the fields on either side of the portrait, none visible to the unaided eye. EDS, die state a.
