Hemingway, Ernest. A Farewell to Arms. Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1929. First edition, with Scribner's seal on the copyright page, 355 pp. Hardcover, 8vo, bound in the original publisher's black cloth with printed gold labels on the spine and upper cover. The binding is tight and the boards are crisp, with just some minor wear to the upper and lower edges. The pages are clean with no writing or marks, with the single exception of a former owner's handwritten name and date on the inside front cover. In fine condition. First issue and in the rare first state dust jacket with the name of the heroine, Catherine Barkley, misspelled "Katharine Barclay" in the synopsis on the front flap. The original dust jacket is rich in color, with some wear along the edges, especially the upper margin, where there is some cracking as well. In very good condition.

Written when Ernest Hemingway was 30 years old and lauded as the best American novel to emerge from World War I, A Farewell to Arms is the unforgettable story of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse. Set against the looming horrors of the battlefield-weary, demoralized men marching in the rain during the German attack on Caporetto; the profound struggle between loyalty and desertion-this gripping, semiautobiographical work captures the harsh realities of war and the pain of lovers caught in its inexorable sweep. Ernest Hemingway famously said that he rewrote the ending to A Farewell to Arms 39 times in a Herculean effort to get the words right. Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500

Baum, L. Frank. Land of Oz, Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz, The Scarecrow of Oz, Ozma of Oz. Four editions of the beloved Wizard of Oz series re-issued in 1959 by The Reilly & Lee Co., Chicago. What makes these four particularly appealing is they all have the original dust jackets by Roland Roycraft. Only eleven of the Oz books were issued in special dust jackets designed by Roland Roycraft and were only a very short time being replaced by the "white cover" editions without dust jackets, which are far more common. Mr Roycraft was a commercial artist with a variety of talents. He spent his later years living in Michigan, teaching watercolor techniques, as well as creating instructional videos and a book. His covers are colorful and no doubt proved appealing in bookstores at the time. All four books are in fine condition. The dust jackets show fading to the spines, have scatterd chipping to edges, and do exhibit in lower margins rippling from moisture and light staining one especially on back side. But overall very colorful and somewhat clean on the facing jackets. Estimated Value $250 - 300

Strong, George Templeton (Edited by Nevins, Allan and Thomas, Milton Halsey). The Diary of George Templeton Strong (Four Volumes, Complete Set). George Templeton Strong (1820-1875) authored an astonishing personal account of life in the 19th Century, especially during the events of the American Civil War. Strong's 2250-page diary was discovered in 1930. Beginning at the age of fifteen, Strong wrote almost every day of his life for nearly forty year, his first entry recorded on October 5, 1835 delivering an astonishing first hand chronicle with excerpts used in Ken Burns' acclaimed documentary "The Civil War" and Ric Burns' "New York: A Documentary. A four volume set was edited and published in 1952, The Macmillan Co., New York. Volume One, Young Man In New York 1835-1849, 391 pp; Volume Two, The Turbulent Fifties 1850-1859, 517 pp; Volume Three, The Civil War 1860-1865, 641 pp; Volume Four, Post War Years 1865-1875, 603 pp. Pictoral slipcase and mylar book covers have protected these volumes and blue boards. Appear never to have never been read, they are in superior condition with ultra-clean pages and solid bindings. Slipcase displays wear, toning, chipping and some splitting but very much did its job in protecting these volumes with all four remaining in superior condition. Estimated Value $500 - 700
