Liszt, Franz (1811-1886). Prolific 19th century Hungarian composer, conductor, and viruoso pianist. Autograph letter signed ("F. Liszt"), in German, 2 pages, 8 x 5½", Weimar, Germany, October 31 1882. To an unnamed recipient (Otto Lessman, German composer, publisher, publicist and music critic, middle to late 1800s): "Esteemed Friend, Today I am sending the transcription of your very successful 3 Tannenhãuser Lieder. Be so kind and accept this little offering and publish them as entirely as you like." A postscript follows: "P.S. Upon return I wish that the poems be enclosed --- either on a separate page, or, even better, underneath the music itself. Send me the last corrections bound." Toning around edges from a previous framing; partial fold to page one. The postscript, written on a 5¼ x 8¼" sheet, partly separated at fold (tiny tack of filmoplast tape holding in check) has light soiling and chipping at lower edge. Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500

Lot 129
Sibelius, Jan (1865-1957). Finnish composer and violinist of the late Romantic and early-modern periods widely recognized as his country's greatest composer. Typed letter signed ("Jan Sibelius"), 1 page, 8¼ x 5¾", bifoloium, Järvenpää, Finland, February 24, 1950. To Cyril Clemens, Esq., President of the International Mark Twain Society. Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope and a sepia tone photograph of the aging composer. During the unproductive period in the formerly prolific composer's later life known as the "Silence of Järvenpää," Sibelius sharply responds to a request that he provide a short definition of music: "…long ago I made a firm decision never to produce anything but music and I have made no exceptions to this rule." With just some very slight discoloration around the perimeter, this letter is fine. Estimated Value $500 - 700
