1899 $20 Liberty PCGS Proof 64. PCGS graded Proof 64+DCAM PQ. CAC Approved. An amazing couin in hand which commands attention not only for its amazing quality but also for its regal golden hue. Only 84 minted in proof and this one of the finer examples known of an estimated population of approximately 30 pieces today. Retaining both memorable quality and ample contrst, this coin brings with it considerable eye appeal. The double eagle or $20 coin is of course our highest regularly circulating coin of this era, the denomination itself was borne out of the California Gold Rush of the late 1840s and 1850s. Gold came out of the ground and rivers in abundance from that state, and gold coinage increased, topping off with the massive double eagle coin for general circulation. The even larger $50 gold pieces were struck by the teritorial minters only in the early 1850s, but those coins were deemed too large for general circulation in the east. Here is a particularly handsome examle of this ever popular design, and a coin which any numismatist will always cherish. A nice untoned example. Pop 2; 3 finer in 65 (PCGS # 99115) Estimated Value $45,000 - 50,000

Lot 1647
1902 $20 Liberty PCGS Proof 63. PCGS graded Proof 63 PQ. CAC Approved. Only 114 minted and this is the first year of the "all brilliant" style of Proofs after years of seeing highly frosted devices which created a number of Cameo or Deep Cameo coins, the 1902 issue offered a more uniform brilliant style with little contrast between the devices and reflective fields. In fact, PCGS has only grade a couple of coins as having the Cameo appearance for this date, and virtually all other 1902 Proof double eagles lack this contrasting feature. Nevertheless, this is how these coins were struck, and this is one of the finer examples which offers excellent orange-gold color, booming reflectivity and strong visual appeal. The number that survived is likely in the 45 pieces range quite low considering the mintage of 114 pieces. PR-63 is right at the middle of the bell curve for this issue as well, with several graded slightly higher, but perhaps even more graded in lower grades including circulated, mishandled examples. A rare issue and important coin that displays the change in proof format for the Philadelphia Mint rather well. Pop 9; 12 finer, 10 in 64, 1 in 65, 1 in 66+ (PCGS # 9118) Estimated Value $20,000 - 25,000
