Davis, Jefferson (1808-1889) President of the Confederate States of America (1861-1865). As U.S. Secretary of War (1853-1857) under President Franklin Pierce, Davis was instrumental in modernizing the U.S. army into a more efficient fighting machine. Autograph letter signed, one page, on ruled paper engraved Beauvoir, Harrison Co., Miss., April 25, 1880. To Miss T.E. Morgan of St. Landry Parish, Louisiana. "My dear Miss Morgan, Your very gratifying letter was duly received, and I pray you to excuse this unintentional delay of its acknowledgement[sic]. Believe me to be with cordial regard respectfully yours Jefferson Davis."; small tape stains in lower blank area and light show-through from small tape stains on verso. With original transmittal envelope, addressed in the hand of Jefferson Davis and bearing a 3¢ U.S. stamp. Very good. A the time he wrote this letter, Davis was writing The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government, which was published in 1881. The lot also includes Two Civil War Envelopes: (1) Union patriotic envelope, full color ship, with "New Hampshire" lettered below;"Miss Liberty" with flag imprinted "For the Union." Pen-cancel 3¢ stamp, but since not bed, no guarantee of postal usage. Great color Charles Magnus engraving, Fine. (2) Confederate used envelope, postmarked Salem, N.C., withy manuscript cancel on 10¢ blue Jefferson Davis stamp (Scott #12). Fine.

Stephens, Alexander H (1812-1883) American politician from Georgia and Vice President of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Autograph Letter Signed (as Vice President of the Confederacy), on yellow lined paper, 8 pp. on two letter sheets of 4 pp, each, 7" x 4½", Crawfordsville, Ga., April 29, 1864. With full letter transcription. To "Hon. James A. Seddon (Confederate) Sec. of War." Stephens writes the Secretary of War strongly voicing his opinions and judgments about the economic, social & military disintegration of the Confederacy. Two horizontal folds on each sheet. Fine.

Two Maryland Letters to Gideon Wells & Two Lincoln Cabinet Officers. Two autograph letters signed, both addressed to Secretary of the Navy Gideon Wells, and both highly recommending Robert H. Thompson for a position as an officer in the Marine Corps. John P. Kennedy (1795-1870) a Whig politician who served as United States Secretary of the Navy under Millard Fillmore (1852-1853), and as a U.S. Representative from the Maryland's 4th congressional district (1838-39), wrote on Aug. 14, 1861, and Charles Benedict Calvert (1808-64), a U.S. Congressman from the sixth district of Maryland, wrote on Aug. 1, 1861. Total of 4 pages, 8 x 5 in. Together with a toned 5 x 7½ in. album page signed and dated by Lincoln's first Vice President, "Hannibal Hamlin / May 8 1889"; also, a 2¼ x 3½ in. piece of paper signed "J. Speed / Atty. Genl." Speed served as Lincoln's Attorney General from December 1864 to July 1866.
