Szobanya, Mihaly. Portrait of a Young Shepherd, 1881. 19th Century masterwork by Hungarian artist, Mihaly Szobanya, born in 1855 at Nemes-Oroszi and died 1898 in Budapest. He studied at the Ecole de Nagyanya, the Hungarian equivalent to the Ecole de Barbizon of France. Principally known as pleinair painters, they borrowed from the reality painting of Gustav Courbet and the Impressionists with the basic character of Szobanya's work characterized by his frequent comparison to the great Courbet. Offered is Szobanya's "Portrait of a Young Shepherd" painted in 1881. This captivating painting is in fine condition with no conspicuous or disfiguring conditions present except for some typical cracking of the paint, and some minor "tarring" or bleeding of the poppyseed oil substrate of the canvas, all very typical of a painting of this vintage. Painting is on a mortised stretcher bar assembly with all mortis keys present. Twentieth Century nails (estimate 1940) hold the canvas in place within the frame. Canvas could use, eventually, tightening along the right side from top downward to bottom. A museum inventory label appears on the stretcher bar "Ernst Muzeum FKC101 (not entirely legible.) Another reads "Dorotheum, W. Dorottya, Szobanya with the Dorotheum an established auction gallery in Wien, Austria. Also written in top center "Menhur Gyrum, Munchen, 1883.) Also other numbers and dates along stretcher bar including 91 10S F and dated 1940.

"Portrait of a Young Shepherd" is signed and dated in red at lower right of canvas. A beautiful portrait in deep, saturated colors rendered in a spectrum of minutely calibrated tints with a beautiful command of light and shadow playing off the boy for dramatic effect. Painting is large, measures 43" x 35" with original gilt wood frame measuring 53" x 47" Frame given its 125+ years has chips, dings and scrapes but still supremely appealing and appropriate to the work. Portrait was appraised and cataloged by the esteemed William and Catherine Hemmerdinger Gallery in Palm Desert in October, 1994, in a 12 page document which will convey with the piece. Appraisal at the time was $42,000.00. Buyer responsible for third party shipping.

After Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743). Jean Charles de Watteville. Oil on canvas, of the Marqués de Conflans (1605-1670) who was appointed by Philip IV of Spain as ambassador to the Court of Saint James in 1660 when Charles II of England ascended the throne. His appointment did not last long, however, for he was involved in an incident which cost him his ambassadorship. On October 10, 1661, the French and Spanish ambassadors in London sent delegations to welcome the new Swedish ambassador, but the delegations became embroiled in a fight which resulted in dead and wounded, the Spanish having got somewhat the better of the French (Samuel Pepys noted the confrontation in his diary). Louis XIV was outraged and declared his intention to declare war on Spain if the culpable parties were not punished. Thus ended de Watteville's ambassadorship to the English court. In 1666, under the regency of Mariana of Austria, he was appointed ambassador extraordinary to Rome, where he participated in the negotiations for the defense of Franche-Comté, and in 1668, he became ambassador to Portugal, where he died in 1670. Shortly before his death, Queen Mariana made him a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. This narrows the time he could have had his portrait painted wearing the Golden Fleece to 1670.

Canvas relined; 33½ x 25"; framed: 40½ x 32". Label on stretcher identifying the sitter as de Watteville. The half length portrait shows de Watteville wearing armor with lace chemise, brown cape, wig and the order of the Golden Fleece. The painting was executed by a follower of Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743), a French Baroque painter of Catalan origin, who was considered the most important portraitist of the period. He was famous for his portraits of Louis XIV and the royals of Europe. Fine condition.

Tamayo, Rufino. Head in Grey (Cabeza en Gris). Rufino Tamayo (1899 - 1991) a native of Oaxaca in Southern Mexico, whose father was a shoemaker, and his mother a seamstress. Some accounts state that he was descended from Zapotec Indians, but he was actually 'mestizo' - of mixed indigenous/European ancestry. (Santa Barbara Museum of Art). He began painting at age 11 and after both parents passing was orphaned where he went to live in Mexico City with his aunt. In 1917, he entered the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, but left soon after to pursue independent study. Four years later, Tamayo was appointed the head designer of the department of ethnographic drawings at the National Museum of Archaeology in Mexico City an aesthetic inspiration that would play a pivotal role in his life. His reputation as an artist exploded from the 1940s well into the 1970s culminating with The Rufino Tamayo Museum of International Contemporary Art, which opened in Mexico in 1981, and displays many of the artist's works, as well as paintings, sculpture and drawings from his private collection. At the time, it was the first major museum not run by the Government.

Typical of how Tamayo integrated the forms and tones of pre-Columbian ceramics into his still lives and portraits of Mexican men and women is apparent in this work entitled "Head in Grey" (Cabeza en Gris.) Color intaglio etching with slight embossing from raised or multiple plates all in dark black inks of the figure, the face surrounded by the grey headdress against a compelling background of olive and grey. Etching, utterly and completely winning, strikingly contemporary with a sense of whimsy given the startled appearance of the figure. In excellent condition, no disfiguring conditions present, no foxing, blemishes or mold present. Archival mounting with linen matte visible, artwork "floating" above it. Numbered at lower left XII/XV this print appears on the cover of Rufino Tamayo: 15 Aquafuertes, Etchings published in 1979. Piece was appraised in 1992 in a four page document by the esteemed William & Catherine Hemmerdinger Gallery in Palm Desert which will convey with the piece. Appraisal in 1992 was $24,500. Measures 29" x 21¼" handsomely matted and framed in lightly gilt wood to 39" x 32".

In Nice, the city he had adopted on leaving Paris, his pictorial expression came into its own his subjects rapidly evolved towards reminiscences about his childhood, then further into fantasies that varied from Biblical themes, themes of exile and interpretations of the cities and places he loved. Offered here from likely the 1970's is a monumental example of his work bursting with energy of Paris and celebrating the glory of Notre Dame. Absolutely mesmerizing technique and command of color. Oil on canvas measuring 38" x 51" framed to 46" x 58" a significant work by this celebrated 20th Century artist in perfect condition. Buyer responsible for 3rd party shipping.

Vargas, Alberto. Diana - The Huntress. Peruvian born Alberto Vargas (1896-1982) moved to the United States just prior to WWI after schooling in Zurich and without question, left a legacy of being the foremost illustrator of pin-up girls of the 20th Century. He began as an artist for the Ziegfeld Follies which led to illustrated work for several Hollywood Studios. His poster for The Sin of Norma Moran is considered one of the all time great one sheets in Hollywood history. His "Vargas Girls" illustrated for Esquire magazine were a favorite for WWII American and Allied pilots who copied his work on the nose of many planes. However his illustrations caused Esquire to take their case to publish his work all the way to the Supreme Court when the Feds denied the magazine its second class mailing permit and try to put them out of business. They prevailed but still let Vargas go which led to almost 20 years of difficult times. Years later, Hugh Hefner engaged Vargas for Playboy and his career once again flourished. After the death of his wife leaving him devastated, he quit painting all together, but occasionally came out of retirement for a few pieces, most notably The Cars album cover art for Candy-O. Offered here is a limited edition and hand-signed lithograph (320/500) of one of his most popular works, Diana - The Huntress printed in early 1979 measuring 29" x 21" and handsomely framed to 34" x 27" and in excellent condition.

Warren, Jim. Untitled. Jim Warren is an American artist best known for record album illustrated art (he won a Grammy for his Bob Seger album art, for Against The Wind) and book and magazine cover illustrations. He has worked in surrealistic fantasy since the 1960s, has collaborated with the Walt Disney Studios, and participated in dual works with marine artist, Robert Wyland. His painting from the 1970s, "Sexual Explosion" became one of the most notorious female nudes ever painted having been stupidly banned from public exhibition, nevertheless great publicity. Offered here is a compelling oil on canvas 19" x 25" framed to 24" x 29", exhibiting a favorite artistic conceit of his, the ripping or tearing of canvas to reveal a more surrealist or fantastic theme. Here a manicured woman's hands tear opens a canvas to reveal, and here the interpretations begin. Is it a world that exists only in the mind, is it the real world blinded by an artist's myopic view of his world and his art, is there a not so subtle sexual overtone to the work? Obviously the painting speaks volumes to Mr. Warren's enduring popularity as an artist whose work is consistently thought provoking. Painting in excellent condition, frame has scuffs and dings.
Estimated Value $700 - 1,000.
