Monumental 19th Century Bronze Bust of Homer. Homer, believed by the ancient Greeks to have been the first and greatest of the epic poets, is best known as the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. Goldberg Auctions is proud to offer this remarkable 19th Century bronze bust of Homer, the first known author of literature of Europe. Beautifully cast, unsigned and burnished to a dark patina, bronze bust sits on a base of honey/gold onyx and stands including the base 21" x 13½" x 8" where top of based has been carved to create a plinth for the mounting. The sculpture with base is about 48 pounds. Faded gallery sticker at rear of base still present with $27,500.00 price, purchased in Beverly Hills in the 1970s and according to the provenance, once displayed at a university library. A striking and very handsome piece in fine condition. Some wear to tip of nose where years of being rubbed for good luck which could easily be touched up, but there is a certain charm in that fact adding immeasurably to its appeal. Buyer responsible for third party shipping. Past experience tells us bronze should be shipped unbolted from base but a qualified shipper will make their recommendations.

Chiparus, Dimitri. Les Girls. Dimitri Haralamb Chiparus (1886-1947) was a Romanian Art Deco era artist whose works are in museums and coveted by collectors world wide. His sculptures are remarkable for their bright and outstanding decorative effect. Dancers of the Russian Ballet, French theatre, and early motion pictures were among his more notable subjects and were typified by a long, slender, stylized appearance and made at the time of bronze and ivory. His original works command prices well into the six figures. Offering here is what is commonly referred to as "After Chiparus", work that comes extraordinarily close to the magnificent treasures of those from the 1920s with similar attention to detail and execution and sold through galleries. Offered here is "Les Girls" 20" x 24" x 6" including the deco styled marble base. Beautiful attention to the casting, the curves, the cold painted details, gilt and carvings of the face and hands are very well done. A beautiful piece of art deco decorative art. Poertzel, Otto. Aristocrat with Borzoi Dogs. Lovely, vintage original German sculpture titled "Woman with Borzoi Dogs" (circa 1930) by Otto Poertzel (1876-1963) known for his elegant sculptures celebrating the sensual lines that defined the Art Deco period. Figure is of beautiful patinated bronze with bone accents mounted for the face and hands, mounted upon a three tier, marble and onyx base. Signed in the bronze part of base, "Prof. O Poertzel". The piece measures approximately 18" x 19½" x 7½" and is in overall excellent condition with usual age toning given a piece of this age. These quality art deco pieces are becoming more valuable and harder to find. Measures 25" x 22" x 11" and weighs over 25 pounds. Buyer responsible for third party shipping.

Tirtoff, Romain De, Erté. Vase de Mystère Oriental. Romain de Tirtoff who went by the name of Erté for some 75 years was considered the father of Art Deco. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, he move to Paris to pursue design and graphic arts and in short order landed his first contract with Harper's Bazaar. That exposure led to spectacular and opulent stage collaborations with Florenz Ziegfeld, opera, dance and finally Hollywood. Erté enjoyed a late career revival in graphic arts and sculpture, a popularity that continues to this day. Offered is a spectacular bronze vase, "The Mystery of the Orient", limited edition of 317/325 by SevenArts in 1990. Cold painted bronze, with brass detailing and boasting Erté's lovely command of fluid movement with his women. 12" x 9" x 9" weighing about 21 pounds and in excellent condition. Muir, James Nathan. Through Shot and Shell. James Nathan Muir (born 1945) and resident of Sedona Arizona where he owns his own foundry, is a supremely accomplished artist whose bronzes are highly prized. Interpreting historical themes, his works focusing on the Civil War are absolutely amazing. Here the monumental "Through Shot and Shell" a limited edition patinated bronze, 42/50 captures the thunder of battle that was the Civil War. In remarkable detail, Muir has captured a Confederate soldier charging through the line of battle, a shattered canon wheel, rifle and canteen at his feet. Bronze measures 19" x 20" x 12½", weighs close to 28 pounds and is mounted on a polished, swivel wood base. For collectors of Civil War themed ephemera and art, this would prove a significant addition to even the most discriminating collection. Buer responsible for third party shipping.

Muir, James Nathan. Bivouac. James Nathan Muir (born 1945) and resident of Sedona Arizona where he owns his own foundry, is a supremely accomplished artist whose bronzes are highly prized. Interpreting historical themes, his works focusing on the Civil War are absolutely stunning. Here a deceptively simply sculpture entitled "Bivouac" (temporary camp without tent or cover) Muir captures the hardship and strife of the Civil War by his astonishing detailed work depicting three percussion muskets leaned up together. Hanging from the guns is a hat, canteen, and two ammunition pouches, one with C.S. markings. Below the guns, laying on the rocks, there is another C.S. marked pouch on a belt with a C.S.A. belt buckle and a bayonet with scabbard and frog. Remarkable command of capturing fabric, leather and metal. Signed and dated by James Nathan Muir, 1987. Measures 25 1/2" tall, with 11 1/2" triangular rotating wooden base. Weighs about 9 pounds and while not heavy buyer responsible for outside shipper most especially for the extra care necessary to protect the bayonets.

Remington, Frederic. Double Trouble. Frederic Remington (1861-1909) proved one of the most iconic and popular Western artists in American history. This very handsome bronze sculpture is a handmade reproduction based on his work. American made and cast in the traditional lost wax practice with a rich, hand-finished patina. Remington's signature is signed in base as in the original along with the contemporary sculptures' initials in the bronze base on the opposing side. Sculpture is mounted on green marble base. 9" x 14" x 7" and in excellent condition. Weighs 22½ pounds.
