Lot 1080		1796. Small date, large letters. B-4, BB-61, Rarity 3. PCGS graded AU-50. Attractive silver gray with pleasing surfaces. There are a hint of adjustment marks on the upper right obverse but they were flattend by the force of the strike. Liberty has strong curl definition with only a trace of wear on the highest points by her face. The eagle too is sharp, retaining several of his elusive breast feathers, and all of the wing feathers are present and accounted for. Scarce as a die variety in this high grade and always in strong demand for the Small Eagle type. Pop 11; 18 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6860) . Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000. Lot 1081		1796. Small date, large letters. B-4, BB-61, Rarity 3. PCGS graded EF-40. Attractive silver gray fields with lighter silver accents on the worn areas. The reverse is more uniform with swathes of deeper and lighter hues intermxed. The strike is sharp and the surfaces above average. Scarce as a date, type and variety when found in EF or finer grades. Lot 1082		1796. Large Date, Small Letters B-5, BB-65 Rarity 2. PCGS graded AU-50. Nice light toning which ranges from delicate gold mixed with silver gray, with patches of deeper russet blending into both sides. The strike is sharp and the surfaces attractive. A scarce date and variety at this lofty grade, with few equivalents for the collector to acquire. Scarce and desirable! All known examples of this die pairing show a raised lump on the coins by IC of AMERICA, this was caused by a defect in the die steel, which became larger as more and more coins were struck, resulting in a raised blob on the coins. This is an entirely natural phenomenon and was caused in a similar fashion to the "dotted date" variety of 1800, also the result of defective die steel. A splendid coin which offers high technical grade as well as eye appeal. Pop 2; 4 finer for the variety at PCGS (PCGS # 40002) . Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000. Lot 1083		1798 B-15, BB-112 Rarity 3. PCGS graded EF-40. Nice even grey toning with deep steel gray and lighter accents on some of the devices, darker on others. The hair definition is sharper than commonly seen with a trace of wear only on the uppermost curls. This is a scarce die paring that is not commonly found this nice, and as such would be a smart selection to represent this issue. Lot 1084		1798. Large eagle, close date. B-13, BB-108, Rarity 3. PCGS graded AU-53. 10 arrows, type 2. The surfaces offer some residual luster and the strike is sharp throughout, with all the stars above the eagle clearly defined. The rims and fields are attractive, as there are no adjustment marks or bumps that marginialize the high eye appeal. A high quality example of this sought after date. Pop 49; 98 finer at PCGS. Lot 1085		1799/8. 13 stars on reverse. B-3; BB-141 R-3. NGC graded AU-55. A truly lovely example. Struck on a smooth problem-free planchet. Plenty of underlying luster still present; all, further enhanced by light violet and delicate golden hues. This is scarce coin this well preserved and it has great features that add to its desirability. First off there is the overdate, which is scarce to begin with. The digit 8 clearly lies beneath the second 9. For the reverse there is a big engraving blunder. When laying out the die and punching in the tiny stars above the eagle, the engraver miscounted and punched in 15 stars instead of 3. Rather than ignoring the mistake, he effectively erarsed the blunder by extending down the two clouds, one on either end of the row of clouds. This would be easy to overlook, except that tiny points from the stars still show peaking out from the enlarged clouds. A high grade example like this shows these fine features quite well, and will no doubt bring hours of fun showing this off to various friends. Pop 24; 59 finer. Estimated Value $7,000 - 8,000. Lot 1087		1800. "AMERICAI". B-19, BB-192, Rarity 2. PCGS graded AU-55. The obverse is toned with deep lilac gray while the stars retain residual luster when examined under a light. The reverse is similar with more mottled shades through the fields. Well struck with Liberty's lovelock clear and her hair well defined. A high grade to represent this scarce and popular AMERICAI variety. Pop 2; 1 finer in 61 at PCGS for the variety. (PCGS # 40082) . Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500. Lot 1088		1801 B-2, BB-212 Rarity 3. PCGS graded MS-61. Boldly struck with nice even toning. The recorded mintage of only 54,545 pieces is low by most measures, certainly low for a Draped Bust dollar! Furthermore of the Heraldic Eagle type dollars, the 1801 date has the lowest number certified in Mint State by PCGS, thus these should sell for a strong premium today. Date collectors would do well to secure this elusive condition rarity, for few are offered and it may be years before another crosses the auction block. There are four die pairings used for circulation strikes in 1801, all are available with patience, with Mint State coins the most challenging. There are three examples listed in the Bowers Encyclopedia of silver dollars as MS-63 of this variety, plus one from an 1895 appearance, likely included in the three noted. Next in the Census is this particular coin as the sole MS-61. Condition Census quality and worthy of a bold bid to capture this rare Bust dollar. The strike is bold and the rims and fields are free of adjustment marks. A plentiful die pairing but always popular for the date! Scarce with only 41,650 struck.
