Lot 2454
German States: Württemberg. Carolin, 1734-M. Fr-3589; KM-337. Karl Alexander, 1733-1737. M below bust for Christian Muller of Nuremberg. Obverse, bewigged armored bust of Duke right. Reverse, crowned shield of arms on detailed mantle. A handsome, mint state coin with a weight of just under 10 grams, it glistens with original luster. Lots of eye appeal. Seldom seen so nice. NGC graded MS-61.

* Karl Alexander was born in Stuttgart, in the heart of Wurttemberg, southern Germany. In 1733 he assumed the role of Duke of Wurttemberg on the death of his cousin Eberhard Louis - but he only ruled for 4 years, and died suddenly, aged 52. In his earlier years he fought successfully in the War of the Spanish Succession and in the war against the Turks. A good army commander, fighting on the side of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI, he had been appointed (in 1720) as governor of the Kingdom of Serbia. During his reign in Wurttemberg, Karl Alexander employed the ill-fated Joseph Oppenheimer who was executed in 1738 for 'abuse of office' while working for Karl! Karl Alexander's coins are comparatively rare, especially in high grade.

Lot 2459
Great Britain. Noble, ND. S.1504; Fr-95. Edward III, 1327-1377. Treaty period (1361-1369). Calais Mint. Obverse; King standing in ornate ship facing, with sword and shield. Flag (denoting Calais mint) at stern of ship. Reverse; Floriated cross with lis at ends, c in center. Mint state. A superb coin with an exquisitely detailed portrait and as fine an example of the rare Calais noble as any which has appeared on the market in recent years. Carefully struck and on a large flan, an abundance of original mint luster gives this 650 year old English gold coin tremendous eye appeal. NGC graded MS-64 Gold Sticker. WINGS Approved.

*In 1344, early in the reign of King Edward III, England's first regular gold coinage was launched. This series comprised the Double Florin or Double Leopard valued at six shillings and the Half Leopard and Quarter Leopard (the Helm). Based on the design of the French coins of Philip de Valois, the Florin and other coins were not popular, and these were quickly replaced by the heavier gold Noble (valued at six shillings and eight pence - or one third of a Pound) and the Half Noble and Quarter Noble valued accordingly.
Edward III had assumed the government of England from his mother, through whom in 1337 he laid claim to the French throne and thus began the Hundred Years War. During the first stages of the war English victories included the Battle of Crecy 1346 and the capture of Calais in 1347. The Treaty of Bretigni was signed with France in 1360 and Edward's title to the kingdom of France was omitted from the coinage, only to be resumed in 1369. Before the Treaty, which recognized England's possession of Calais as a trading base (just across the English Channel) a mint was opened there in 1363 for producing English style coins. The Calais coins are rarer than their English siblings and often bear a flag on the ship's stern and a c (instead of an e) in the center of the reverse design - as is the case with this specimen.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 14,000.

Lot 2461
Great Britain. Unite, ND. S.2619; Fr-234. James I, 1603-1625. Fourth bust. Mint mark mullet (star) (1611-12). Obverse; Half length portrait of king bearing sword and sceptre. Reverse, crowned shield of arms with I R at sides (Iacobus Rex) Reverse; Legend reads FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM UNAM (I will make them one nation - Ezekial 37,22) a reference to James I's unification of the thrones of England and Scotland. Mint state. A superb fully round coin struck on a large flan, sharply detailed in parts and glistening with original mint luster. NGC graded MS-62 Gold Sticker. WINGS Approved.

* This coin was made in the period 1611-1612. In 1604, a year after the accession of the new king, the weight of the gold Pound was reduced and the new coin became known as a 'Unite.' In 1619 the Unite was replaced by a new, lighter 20 shillings piece known as the gold Laurel. The Unite was often a badly produced coin - weak in parts, misshapen and with flan cracks and defects. This specimen is unusually round and free from many of the faults which characterize the denomination.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 5,000.

Lot 2462
Great Britain. Laurel of Twenty Shillings, ND. S.2638B; Fr-242. James I, 1603-1625. Third coinage (1619-1625). Mint mark, trefoil (1624). Obverse; Draped laureate bust of king, small ties to wreath. Mark of value XX (20 shillings) behind head. Obverse legend IACOBVS D:G: MAG:BRI: FRA: ET HIB: REX. Reverse; Crowned shield of arms with FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM UNAM around. A lovely, practically mint state coin with lots of original color and a strongly detailed portrait. NGC graded AU-58.

*James I was King of England from 1603 to 1625 and (as King James VI) King of Scotland 1567 - 1625. The son of Mary Queen of Scots (executed by Elizabeth I in 1587) he assumed power in Scotland in 1583 and succeeded to the English throne on the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. He managed to keep peace on an international level but in England he alienated the Puritans by his High Church views and incurred the wrath of Parliament by his assertion of his divine right to govern. He was also unpopular because of his favorites - most notably the foppish Duke of Buckingham. But for numismatists his coinage was richly varied and beautifully detailed.
