*Charles V was known as Charles the Wise. He was regent during the captivity of his father John II in England 1356-1360 and he became King on his father's death. From 1369-1380 he took back nearly all the land England had taken from France.

France. Ecu d'or a la couronne, ND. Fr-291. Charles VI, 1380-1422. A classic medieval French gold coin featuring a crowned shield of three fleurs de lis. This coin heralds from the scarcer Troyes mint. NGC graded MS-63.

*Charles VI was known as 'the Mad' and also 'the Well beloved.' As King of France in 1380 at the age of 12 he was under the regency of his uncle until 1388. He became mentally unstable in the early 1390s and then civil war broke out between the Dukes of Burgundy and Orleans. To add to the mix Henry V of England invaded France in 1415, beating the French at Agincourt that year. In 1420 Charles was forced (at the Treaty of Troyes) to recognize Henry as his successor.
