1808 S-277 R2 Turban Head VF30. Sharpness EF45 or a bit better but the obverse is covered with microscopic roughness mixed with numerous tiny hairline scratches. The only other marks are a very shallow pit on the end of the hair ribbon, another on the rim outside the dentils above the head, and a few more on the rim over MERIC. Lightly cleaned and retoned frosty dark steel with lustrous lighter brown toning in protected areas. MDS Breen state V. Star #1 is weak but still visible and the die cracks through the D in UNITED are strong.

1809 S-280 R2 Turban Head NGC graded Unc Details, Improperly Cleaned. A sharp, attractive example, but it was lightly cleaned and has nicely retoned frosty medium olive brown and bluish steel. The only mark is a tiny planchet void right of the second S in STATES. M-LDS, Breen state VII, with several die cracks at the top of the reverse. Our grade is AU50+ net EF45+. An impressive example of this tough date in spite of the recoloring, and it comes with an important provenance.

  Quartet of Cents, 1810-1845. Includes 1810/09 S-281 R1 Overdate 10 over 09 VG7 net AG3 for dents, 1817 N-6 R1 E-MDS VF35, 1820/19 N-1 R1 Overdate Large 20 over 19 AG3, and 1845 N-4 R1 Repunched 5 MDS (c) EF40. The 1817 and 1845 are smooth and attractive. Lot of 4 coins.

Lot 228
1810 S-284 R3 Turban Head AU50. Sharpness closer to mint state and the eye appeal is outstanding, but a strong glass reveals a few very faint horizontal hairline scratches above and below CENT plus a couple more even fainter ones in the field left of star 10. The obverse is choice lustrous light to medium steel brown with slightly darker steel brown highpoints and a hint of reddish steel brown toning on the lips. The reverse is glossy chocolate brown with lustrous lighter steel brown covering the protected areas. M-LDS, Breen state III, with die clashmarks visible on both sides. Called MS60 net AU50 and tied for CC#7 in the Noyes census, his photo #34004. A beautiful, lustrous 1810 cent in spite of the faint marks.

1811/10 S-286 R3 Turban Head Overdate 11 over 10 VF20. Sharpness VF35 but lightly burnished, strongest on the obverse. There are no traces of roughness and the reason for smoothing the surfaces is unknown. A tiny rim nick above star 7 is the only notable mark, and it is trivial. Very nicely recolored glossy medium chocolate brown fading to darker chocolate in protected areas. MDS, Breen state II, showing die clashmarks on the reverse. The overdate is obvious to the unaided eye. Removed from an NGC slab graded AU Details Burnished (NGC label #3743189-012 included, and it shows the variety attribution).

1811 S-287 R2 Turban Head VF35. Ten points sharper but there is a patch of very tiny pits in the field over the back of the head, a shallow pit just below the earlobe, and a fine hairline scratch from the lower lip into the hair under the ear. No verdigris and the toning is an attractive frosty medium brown and steel blended with some light reddish chocolate and tan on the reverse. MDS, Breen state III, showing fine radial die flowlines in the fields on both sides. Not perfect but still nice for an 1811 cent.

1811 S-287 R2 Turban Head PCGS Genuine, VF Details, Cleaning. Frosty dark olive brown and steel. The surfaces are satiny and there is no trace of cleaning as stated on the slab label. However there is a very dull dent on the chin that has caused a minor bulge at the opposing spot over the C in CENT. Otherwise this cent is free of defects, just dark. LDS. Our grade is F15+ sharpness net VG10.

1812 S-289 R1 Turban Head, Large Date EF40. Ten points sharper with extremely faint granularity hidden under frosty dark olive brown and steel toning. The roughness is barely visible under strong 16x magnification. No marks or other distractions. Sharply struck EDS, Breen's rare state I. The repunching on the date is visible on all 4 digits. Nice eye appeal in spite of the relatively dark color. Removed from a PCGS slab called Genuine, Unc Details, Cleaning (this cent was not cleaned). The PCGS label is included, #36508.92/31819702, and it shows the S-289 attribution. Comes with an important provenance.

The surfaces appear perfectly smooth to the unaided eye but a strong glass reveals uniform extremely faint granularity under the glossy toning. No verdigris or contact marks. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, showing die clashmarks inside the wreath. Decent eye appeal in spite of the recoloring. Our grade is VF35 sharpness net VF25.

Satiny mint luster covers the fields and protected areas and this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. Just a hint of friction on the highest points of the devices from mint state. The only notable marks, and they are trivial, are a tiny pinprick over the left top of the 8 and another close above the D in UNITED. Sharply struck MDS. Our grade is AU50 Choice. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in AU58 for the variety. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label (PCGS # 36514) .

1814 S-294 R1 Turban Head, Crosslet 4. PCGS graded MS-63 Brown. Choice frosty chocolate brown and steel with a subtle hint of lighter reddish chocolate brown toning in the field before the eye. Satiny mint frost covers this cent and it offers outstanding eye appeal. Sharply struck MDS, Breen state II, showing die clashmarks on both sides. Struck slightly off center to K-6 leaving some of the dentils off the planchet. A beautiful Turban Head cent; essentially flawless with just a hint of rub on the very highest points of the devices. Our grade is AU58 Choice with mint state eye appeal. PCGS population 3; 1 finer in 63+ for the variety. The attribution is shown on the PCGS label (PCGS # 36520) .

1814 S-295 R1 Turban Head, Plain 4 PCGS graded XF45. Attractive glossy olive brown and chocolate. No spots, stains or roughness. The only marks are a couple tiny scratches and a dull pinprick, all nestled between star 13 and the adjacent 4. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state VI, with a very light die crack arcing from star 12 through the lowest curl and the 8 to the dentils below. Our grade is VF35. The "Plain 4" feature is noted on the PCGS label.
