Lot 1275
1827, 7 over 6. NGC graded MS-66. O-102. R1. Wonderful warm sunset and blue toning on both sides. Boldly struck. Tied for the second finest of this variety according to Steve Herrman's Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars 1794 - 1839. A single obverse die was used to coin all the 1827/6 overdate pieces, and it was paired with three distinct reverses. On Overton-102, the reverse characteristics include the right sides of T-I in line, and there is a small defect lump located at the top right of the final A in AMERICA to the segment above. AM joined, with the base of M higher than A.

To further expand on what we have hinted at, this is a highly lustrous and vivacious gem, and a benchmark for other examples of bust half dollars that share this lofty 66 grade. While the strike is firm and solid, it surpasses most other overdates seen in mint condition, certainly all of the head and shoulder details were impressed deeply by the die. An exceptional opportunity for the advanced variety or date collector. Pop 2; 1 finer in 67.
Estimated Value $17,000 - 19,000.

1833. Overton-107, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-66. Lightly toned over satiny luster to the centers, with the rims a bit deeper with russet-gold in areas. The surfaces are satin smooth and not interrupted by handling marks when carefully studied. One of the finer examples certified today and highly appealing for quality, luster and toning. A condition rarity! Pop 5; 3 finer, 2 in 67, 1 in 68.

Lot 1279
1836. Reeded Edge. PCGS graded AU-50. Nicely toned. The 1836 Reeded Edge half dollars were the first coins struck on the Mint's new steam operated press. This long sought advance allowed the coiners to monitor the strikes and keep them consistent through the day, unlike the variation from human powered coining presses. The steam driven machine did not tire as the day wore on. The engraving of dies dramatically changed with this new technology as well, as entire dies could be made from a master hub, and no longer were engravers needed to punch indivdual letters and stars into each working die by hand. Only the date needed to be added to each die as the primary maaster hub could last for years to create many working dies. This particular issue has always been popular with collectors for its historic event of steam driven coinage, as well as its rarity. This attractive About Uncirculated coin will no doubt be a centerpiece of an advanced collection. Only 5,000 struck. Pop 26; 100 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 6175) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,800.

1837. NGC graded MS-65. Frosty and mostly white with a dash of russet-gold and iridescence around the obverse and reverse rims. Boldly struck, particularly so on Liberty's curls and the eagle's wing feathers. This issue was struck on the still new (introduced in 1836) steam driven coining press. Decidedly few of these early half dollars survive at the gem level, and most seen fall well short of the quality, appeal and luster of this example. Pop 41; 17 finer at NGC.
Estimated Value $12,000 - 13,000.
