Lot 1175
1875-S. NGC graded MS-66. A fully white gem. The strike is outstanding too for this short-lived type coin, with Liberty displaying full hair definition and the eagle also crisply struck. Although this issue is the most plentiful date of the series, the mintage of 1,155,000 pieces is truly not that large by comparison to other denominations. Gems are scarce, and at this lofty grade level, the population numbers dwindle down quickly. Hence this sparkling white jewel will make a glorious addition to any advanced collection. Pop 54; 8 finer, 7 in 67, 1 in 68.
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

Lot 1177
1876. NGC graded MS-66. Nicely toned with attractive russet-gold hues that span both the obverse and reverse over lustrous fields. A key date with only 14,640 struck for this final year of business strikes (Proof coinage continued through 1878) for this denomination. This issue has long been popular for its tiny mintage and when found in such outstanding condition as noted, will undoubtedly bring a strong price. Pop 17; 5 finer, 1 in 66 Star, 4 in 67.
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.

Lot 1178
1876. PCGS graded Proof 64 Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. Fully white and boldly struck. A little undergraded. The fields and devices are of exceptional quality and offer the collector ample eye appeal. There are no distracting nicks or hairlines, and the color is bright and fresh. A low mintage and rare date. Only 1,260 struck. Pop 29; 21 finer, 8 in 65, 1 in 65+, 11 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 85304) .

Lot 1179
1878. NGC graded Proof 65 Cameo. Fully white Gem Proof. Only 600 struck. Although the Western silver producers were selling large amounts of silver to the mints at a decent price in the early 1870s, due to the acquiescence of the Mint Director, Linderman, it never seemed quite enough. Nevada Senator Jones attempted to improve the situation by introducing legislation for a twenty-cent piece, producing the absurd claim that storekeepers in the West were shortchanging customers on the grounds that no five-cent pieces were on hand. There were plenty of half dimes yet in circulation in that area, but no one bothered to mention that fact.

At any rate, Congress did authorize the new coins, but they were the "original" Susan B. Anthony dollars and about as popular as the later model. Authority to coin them was revoked in 1878 and they were quickly forgotten, except by shrewd numismatists.

Stunning original brilliance and mirror "depth" on this one, with simply outstanding surfaces. Even the strike is 100% complete, while we find no distracting handling marks. If you have been searching diligently for a top end Gem of this important Proof-only issue, then here is a high-end example for the brilliant-coin lover. Philadelphia coined Proofs only in 1878; the denomination was put out to pasture, as it were, after 4 short years of very limited production. Worth a premium for the majestic beauty and cameo effect, and certain to please the advanced collector. Pop 16; 7 finer, 5 in 66, 2 in 67.
Estimated Value $7,500 - 8,000.

Lot 1180
1878. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely deep sunset toning that spans both sides of this handsome gem. The surfaces are outstanding as well, and appear free of contact when closely examined. This is a proof only issue and the final year this curious denomination was coined. Needless to say these are quite popular with today's collector and demand for gems continues to increase. Only 600 struck. Pop 27; 12 finer, 11 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 5306) .
Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500.

Lot 1181
1878. PCGS graded Proof 65. Lovely light blue and gold toning throughout. This is the final year of issue for this denomination, which came to a quick and sudden end after just four years in production (two of those years are Proof only coinage). Here is one of the finer examples from this meager issue, and combined with the quality is the splendid toning. A simply elegant example that will grace any numismatic cabinet lucky enough to secure it when the hammer falls. Only 600 struck. Pop 27; 12 finer, 11 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 5306) .
