Lot 1901
1801. PCGS graded AU Details, Filed Rims. Plenty of original mint luster remaining, which justifies the grade. The details are excellent and all on a problem-free planchet. Only 44,344 struck, and about 650 to 850 examples estimated to have survived. This would still make a good representative of the type and its problems are minimal (PCGS # 8564) .

Lot 1902
1803. 14 Stars. BD-5, Large Stars. NGC graded AU-58. Mostly untoned with some obverse adjustment marks as made on the lower portion of that side. The extra star refers to the a much smaller and somewhat hidden tiny star placed atop the far right cloud near the wing of the eagle. This feature was clearly added to the die, but for what purpose is not known. This small star is different from the star die punch used to engrave the stars placed over the eagle, and different from the obverse stars used. Why was this small star added t othe reverse die? why does it appear only this one time on this reverse die? These questions may never be answered. Long popular with collectors not only for the elegance of this design and rarity of these large gold coins, but with the added star is a feature where the story has not yet been figured out. Only 15,017 struck. Pop 9; 25 finer at NGC for the variety.
Estimated Value $24,000 - 26,000.
