Lot 1659
1855-C. PCGS graded AU-53. Rich golden toning. this is the toughest Charlotte Mint Gold dollar behind the unobtainable 1849-C with the Open Wreath. Furthermore the 1855-C was the first appearance from the Charlotte Mint of the Type II style for this series, which increased the diameter of the planchet from 12.7 mm to 14.3 mm, but in the same process, the planchet bacame thinner. Thus all the mints had diffculty in striking the Type II design. This date and mint is also known for being the lowest grade on average of all this series, so high grade pieces like this splendid AU-53 are in strong demand when they appear. Only 9,803 struck. Pop 16; 23 finer, 12 in 55, 7 in 58, 1 in 60, 3 in 61. (PCGS # 7533) .
Estimated Value $6,500 - 7,000.

1855-O. PCGS graded MS-62. Only 55,000 struck. This is a scarce issue and one that is further enhanced as it is the rare Type II style gold dollar with the wider but thinner planchet than seen on the Type I gold dollar style. Mint state coins are highly prized for their rarity of this type, and here is one from New Orleans that will suit any advanced specialist of this challenging series. Pop 15; 12 finer, 7 in 63, 5 in 64. (PCGS # 7535) .

Lot 1665
1857-D. PCGS graded AU-58. CAC Approved. Light gold tone and exceptionally well preserved for a coin which scarcely circulated. Luster resides in the fields and the strike is reasonably sharp for this Dahlonega date, but shows the characteristic softness on the upper reverse. The finest seen by PCGS is a hair's breadth finer at MS-62, and this is a rarity in all grades, especially so this well preserved. David Akers noted that this date and mint is "one of the most underrated of all Type III gold dollars". Needless to say, any specialist would do quite well to secure this fantastic example of this rare and challenging Dahlonega issue. Only 3,533 struck. Pop 19; 15 finer, 2 in 60, 7 in 61, 6 in 62. (PCGS # 7546) .

1859-C. NGC graded MS-61. Soft strike through the dentils as commonly seen on this scarce issue, but the central devices and wreath are sharper, particularly the mintmark. This date and mint is quite scarce in any Mint State grade. Perfect quality for the Charlotte gold or Gold dollar date collector to pursue. Only 5,235 struck. Pop 8; 10 finer in 62. (PCGS # 7552) .

Lot 1667
1860-D. PCGS graded AU-58+. CAC Approved. Lovely golden toning and choice. This is one of the key dates to the series that is quite difficult to find in the mid to upper gradeds of AU or finer. This issue is always poorly struck, notably on the UN of UNITED and on Liberty's plumes and hair. This example shows only a trace of circulation on the high points, and the color is a delightful uniform orange-gold. A prize for the Gold dollar specialist or Dahlonega afficiando. Only 1,566 struck. Pop 1; 12 finer, 9 in 61, 2 in 62, 1 in 63. (PCGS # 7556) .

1884. NGC graded Proof 66 Cameo. Untoned and fully brilliant. A glorious gem proof that offers not only splendid surfaces in a technical way, but also fantastic eye appeal from the highly reflective mirror fields which seem to drop away from the frosted devices. A pleasing example of this series in oustanding condition. Only 1,006 struck. Pop 9; 17 finer, 1 in 66 Star, 13 in 67, 3 in 68. (PCGS # 87634) .

Lot 1676
1884. PCGS graded Proof 66. Wonderful rich golden toning. Only 1,006 struck, and this is clearly one of the finest seen today. The surfaces area a delight of rich copper-gold reflectivity from the fields, while the devices are frosty and undiminshed by handling issues. As always seen the date on these rare proofs shows unusual repunching low on the 18, part of the charm of studying coins from this era is finding the little nuances like this that add a certain human touch to an otherwise mechanical process of coin production. The fields reflect deeply the orange gold surface with contrasting satiny and frosted devices. Some faint stippled effect is seen in the fields, sometimes called "orange peel" for the appearance of an orange, and typical of proof gold dollars of the 1880s. Here is a truly sterling example in every respect. Pop 10; 4 finer in 67 (PCGS # 7634) .
Estimated Value $11,000 - 12,000.

1884. PCGS graded Proof 65+ Cameo. Fully white gem cameo. The surfaces are pleasing with no distrating marks, and the cameo contrast draws in the eye to the frosted devices while the mirror fields seem to fall away in their reflectivity. Strong visual appeal and a wholesome example for the connoisseur of proof gold coinage. Only 1,006 struck. Pop 1; 13 finer, 7 in 66, 6 in 67. (PCGS # 87634) .

Lot 1678
1885. PCGS graded Proof 65. Only 1,105 minted. Handsome quality and one of the finer proofs to exist from this series. The surfaces are pleasing with good reflectivity and are quite clean, lacking the usually seen handling marks or nicks. Gems like this are so impressive when held, their dramatic proof finish really stands tall above a typical circulation strike from the period. Lightly toned with a small speck touching the inside wreath above the R of DOLLAR. Pop 13; 15 finer, 13 in 66, 2 in 67 (PCGS # 7635) .
