Lot 1655
1854-D. NGC graded AU-55. Mostly untoned. The strike is pleasing on this rare date and mint, with Liberty displaying most of her curl defintion, and the surfaces are generally clean. As always seen the reverse die has fine die lines to the left of the mintmark, and there are some moderately soft areas on the wreath, also diagnostic to this challenging issue. Only 2,935 struck, and today perhaps as many as 90 distinct examples exist. While not as rare as the 1856-D and 1861-D coins, this date is still one of the toughest of the Dahlonega gold dollars to find in any grade. Pop 8; 49 finer at NGC. (PCGS # 7526) .
Estimated Value $4,000 - 4,500.
