Struck in deep, high-relief; meticulous details and lustrous, prooflike surfaces. Uncirculated. Built in memory of Russia’s victories, notably in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828, the arch was designed by Vasily Stasov. City leaders originally planned to place it by Obvodny Canal, but as the city limits expanded further south, the site was moved to the intersection of the Moscow Road and the Ligovsky Canal. Struck to serve as a memento of the 30th birthday of the Tsar’s fourth son Vladimir, only 100 pieces of this extremely rare coin were minted. Russia issued just four large gold coin types: the 1902 Nicholas II portrait 37 ½ Roubles, the 1896 and 1908 25 Roubles and this type. Of the four, this is the rarest and most elusive, a great prize for the collector. Authenticated and graded by PCGS PR 58.
