Lot 2398		*Moskowitz, Ira "Torah II Series"* (1912-2001) Painter and master print maker. Moskowitz devoted much of his life to the production of Judaic art. A suite of thirteen Original Handcolored Etchings illustrating Torah; pulled at Bank Street Atelier, New York City, by Emiliano Sorini; text printed by Fequet et Baudier, Typography and Design, by Aline Elmayan, Paris, France; all signed on lower right border, in pencil; all numbered: 28/120 lower left border, in pencil; on white Arches paper; image:15 x 17½", with border: 29 x 20½"; August 1970; all thirteen contained in a cloth covered presentation box. Etchings include: "Sounding the Shofar," " Zot ha Torah," "Sabbath of Genesis," "Sanctification of the Sabbath," "The Belze Rebbe," "Baroque Synagogue," Man at Prayer," "The Lulav," "Meditation, Bukharian Synagogue," "Prayer and Meditation," "Talmud Torah," "Discussing the Talmud I," and "Discussing the Talmud II." Lot 2399		An Original Map From The 1979 Israel-Egypt Peace Treaty. The Israel-Egypt peace treaty was signed in Washington, D.C., in a ceremony on the White House lawn, on March 26, 1979, sixteen months after Egyptian President Anwar Sadat's historic 1978 visit to Israel and the subsequent Camp David Accords, negotiated between Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin with the mediation of U.S. President Jimmy Carter. President Sadat and Prime Minister Begin were consequently awarded the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize. The basic tenets of the treaty were the mutual recognition of each country by the other, the cessation of the state of war that had existed between them since 1948, and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the Sinai Peninsula and its return to Egypt. Egypt thus became the first Arab country to officially recognize Israel, a step for which President Sadat would be assassinated (6 Oct. 1981). "Annex II International Boundary" is a 67½" x 42" map of Sinai showing the recognized international boundary between Egypt and Israel. This map, which belonged to someone who took part in the Camp David negotiations, was signed in Washington, D.C. on 25 March 1979 by the diplomats, one for Israel and one for Egypt, who were assigned the task of preparing it; Alfred S. Gilbertson, Jr. signed as a witness. The map is in fine condition except for a couple of small tears at fold intersections. A unique opportunity to own a piece of this historic treaty. Lot 2400		Palestine Statement of Policy - The White Paper of 1939. Palestine Statement of Policy. London: HMSO, 1939, 9½ x 6", 12pp. Stapled self-wrappers; lightly toned, small edge split, numerals in Arabic and English at upper right title page. One of only 1500 copies. Also known as The MacDonald White Paper after Malcolm MacDonald, the British Colonial Secretary who presided over its creation. The rise of Nazi Germany and the passing of the 1936 Nuremberg Laws, which stripped 500,000 German Jews of their citizenship, caused growing numbers of Jews to emigrate to Palestine. The Arab revolt in Palestine (1936-1939) was fueled by Palestinian Arab concern over the growing Jewish population and territorial presence. Concerned that Palestinian Arab leaders had received funding from Fascist Italy and realizing that a war was approaching, the British wanted to stop the Italians and their allies from extending their sphere of influence in the region. The White Paper provided for creating an independent Palestine to be governed by Palestinian Arabs and Jews in proportion to their numbers in the population by 1939 (section I). Further: a limit of 75,000 Jewish immigrants was set for the five-year period 1940-1944 (consisting of a regular yearly quota of 10,000 and a flexible supplementary quota of 25,000); after 1944 the further immigration of Jews to Palestine would depend on permission of the Arab majority (section II); and restrictions were placed on the rights of Jews to buy land from Arabs (section III). On May 22, 1939, the House of Commons debated a motion that the White Paper was inconsistent with the terms of the Mandate (embodied in the Mandate was the Balfour Declaration, a November 2, 1917 letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild that made public the British support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine). It was defeated by 268 votes to 179. The following day the House of Lords accepted the new policy without a vote. Lloyd George called the White Paper an act of perfidy and Winston Churchill voted against the government in which he was a minister. The White Paper fueled Jewish resentment, which lead to Irgun attacks on British-controlled strategic infrastructure and the creation of the Stern Gang. In September 1939, upon the outbreak of World War II, Ben-Gurion gave the rallying cry, "War against Hitler as though there were no White Paper, and war against the White Paper as though there were no Hitler." Lot 2401		Dayan, Moshe (1915-1981) Israeli military leader and statesman; he played a key role in four wars and helped negotiate the Israel-Egypt peace treaty. As the fourth Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces (1953-58), he became a fighting symbol to the world of the new state of Israel. He went on to become Defense Minister and later Foreign Minister of Israel. Autograph manuscript, written in Hebrew, 6pp, 11¾" x 8¼", blue ink on yellow tissue paper, n.p., n.d. (c. 1955-1965). Untranslated. Rough draft of Dayan's speech regarding the scandalous Lavon Affair. In this incredible document Dayan focuses on his relations with the Israeli Defense Force and the political echelon between the Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Chief of Staff. In 1954, the Israeli secret service set up a spy ring in Egypt, with the purpose of blowing up U.S. and British targets. The intent was to blame the terrorist acts on Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser and, consequently, alienate the U.S. and Britain from Egypt and Nasser. The spy ring was run by AMAN (army intelligence), not the superbly professional Mossad, and the ring was caught and exposed when incendiary bombs went off prematurely in the pocket of one of the ring members. The Lavon Affair broke in July of 1954, and it turned out to be disastrous for Israel in several ways: Israel lost significant standing and credibility in its relations with the United Kingdom and the United States that took years to repair and the political aftermath caused considerable political turmoil in Israel that affected the influence of its government. To Moshe Sharett, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister: "Dear Moshe, We shouldn't exaggerate the real value of the British Foreign Office's declarations, and the one-sided votes of the USSR against us in the Security Council. We cannot ignore all this, nor negate the political significance. But our first duty must be to believe in the righteousness of our way, while waiting, aside from extraordinary events and international earthquakes. Lot 2403		Benjamin, Judah P (1811-1884) Secretary of War, then Secretary of State of the C.S.A. One of the most gifted minds in the C.S.A. government, Benjamin escaped capture at the end of the war by separating himself from Jefferson Davis' party. He escaped to England where he would work as a barrister under Queen Victoria until his return in 1883. Autograph document signed ("Benjamin") three times as attorney for the plaintiff, twice on the document and once on the docket, 3pp, 13¼ x 8¼", New Orleans, Dec. 3, 1842. Written in both English and French to accommodate the large Cajun population of Louisiana. The document involves rent due on a "building in Chartres Street between St. Louis and Toulouse Street known as 'L'Hotel des Etrangers'." Lot 2404		Aleichem, Shalom (Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich) (1859-1916) Yiddish author, humorist and playwright from Ukraine. The musical "Fiddler on the Roof," based on his stories about Tevye the Dairyman, was the first commercially successful English-language stage production about Jewish life in Eastern Europe. Autograph letter signed, 1p, in Hebrew, 5½ x 4½, Nervi, Italy, 1911, on personal stationery stamped : "S. Rabinowitz - Schalom Aleichem, Nervi (Itlalia) Villa Rosengarte." Rare Shalom Aleichem letter adressed to his friend Padelshevsky: "My dear and esteemed friend Padelshevsky: I would very much like to know if you received my modest gift that I sent you before the holiday. I thank you for your feelings of love and thanks to my family, and I send greetings to you and your family and conclude with love. Shalom Aleichem P.S. About my situation, I always have work to do. With thanks to God the creator of the World!" Very good; light soiling and fold marks at lower right. Consists of mostly 7" x 5" and 10" x 8" signed photos as follows: Yitzhak Rabin (1922-1995, Prime Minister of Israel, serving two terms in office, 1974�77 and 1992 until his assassination in 1995. 22 individually signed color photos with various leaders including American Presidents and other historical figures and places. Chaim Herzog (1918-1997). 6th President of Israel. In office 5 May 1983 - 13 May 1993. A total of 18 individually signed and dated color photos with various leaders and places. Yitzhak Shamir (1915-2012). Prime Minister of Israel, serving two terms, 1983-84 and 1986-1992. Before the establishment of the State of Israel, Shamir was a leader of the Zionist group Lehi. A total of 5 individually signed color photos with historical figures and places. Menachem Begin (1913-1992). founder of Likud and the sixth Prime Minister of the State of Israel 21 June 1977 - 10 October 1983. Before the creation of the state of Israel, he was the leader of the Zionist militant group Irgun. Begin�s most significant achievement as Prime Minister was the signing of a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979. A total of 10 individually signed black and white photos, many with President Carter. Lot 2406		Ben-Gurion, David. Autograph letter signed ("D. Ben-Gurion"), one page, in English, on ruled paper, 8¼ x 4½", Sdeh Boker, June 22, 1965. To Dr. Martin Rywell, Editory of "Listen" in Harriman, Tennessee. "Only the first part of the story you mention in your letter is true: I visited Burma in 1961; I met Prime Minister U. Nu. We discussed Buddhism. But the story about a 'trick' is a pure invention." Written from the kibbutz Sdeh Boker in the Negev desert, where Ben-Gurion lived after he retired from political life. Fine. Lot 2407		Jobotinsky Vladimir "Ze'ev" (1880-1940) Zionist leader, author, poet, orator, soldier, and founder of the Jewish Self-Defense Organization in Odessa. After World War I, Jabotinsky actively lectured and wrote for many publications, advancing the Zionist cause. In 1925, the World Union of Zionist Revisionists was established with headquarters in Paris. Jabotinsky lived in Jerusalem from 1927-1929. While on a speaking engagement abroad in 1929, the British administration cancelled his return visa to Palestine. From 1930 until he died of heart failure in New York in 1940, Jabotinsky actively lectured worldwide for the establishment of a Jewish state. In his will, written in 1935, he asked that when he died, he could be buried anywhere, but requested that his remains be transferred to Palestine "only at the instructions of a Jewish government." In 1965, ordered by Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, the remains of Jabotinsky and his wife were reinterred on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Photo signed ("V. Jabotinsky") on verso, with other signatures, black & white, 2 x 3", n.p., n.d. Jabotinsky is pictured in the foreground, third man from the left, near center. Lot 2408		Ben-Gurion, David. Typed Letter Signed as Prime Minister, 1p, 8¼ x 6½", in Hebrew (with English translation), Jerusalem, Nov. 7, 1961. Very good; a few small blemishes. The letter is stapled to a blank page at the front of a book, "David Ben-Gurion, A Pictorial Record," (Tel-Aviv: Joseph Arieli Press, 1953) and was sent to Yehudit and Hillel Avni, thanking them for their letter and photograph of their family. In part, "For me it was a joyful tiding when I heard that an Ashkenazi kibbutz family has six children. Lot 2411		[Salomon, Haym] Newspaper With Two Haym Solomon Ads. "The Pennsylvania Packet or The General Advertiser," Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by David C. Claypoole, Aug. 23, 1781, 4pp, 17 x 10½". Very good. Page 3 has a 2½ x 3" ad: "Haym Salomon, Broker, at his office in Front Street, between Market and Arch Streets, Transacts all kinds of business on Commission. Buys and sells Bills of Exchange on any part of Europe. As also, Pennsylvania and other State Money. And which he receives in payment for Bills of Exchange, At the highest price given. He gives constant attendance at his Office, from nine to one in the forenoon and from three to seven in the afternoon." On page 4, another ad appears with much the same information: "Haym Salomon, Broker, Sells Bills on Holland, France, Spain, England, St. Croix, Etc. He likewise sells on commission, Loan-office Certificates, and all other Kinds of Merchandise…. " Accompanied by a Report from the Committee on Revolutionary Claims, made to the 30th Congress, First Session of the House of Representatives, dated April 26, 1848, 3pp. acknowledging that claims made by Salomon's legal representative (he died in 1785) are legitimate, that "…during the war of the revolution [Solomon] largely contributed of his pecuniary means toward carrying on the war--assisting the agency of finance by frequent loans of money… and in contributing to the support and sustenance of many eminent men of that time [including Madison, Jefferson, Randolph, and others], engaged in the struggle for independence. And that, of all the moneys advanced by Haym Salomon no evidence exists of any payments by the government of the United States in discharge of their obligations to him; and…no such payment or payments were ever made to the widow or children of the aforesaid." The sum advanced by Solomon was shown by evidence to be $353,744 in currency of the time; he died intestate and his family was left impoverished. This relates to helping Tuviah Freidman arrange for lectures on the Holocaust, "and make it possible for him to take evidence from Holocaust survivors who may reside in your cities, in order to discover any Nazi criminals who are still free, before the Statue of Limitation comes into effect in December, 1969 Signatories include: Yitzhak Rabin (Prime Minister); Shimon Peres (Defence Minister); Menahem Savidor (Speaker of the Knesset); Menachem Begin (Prime Minister); and many more. Lot 2413		Rubinstein, Arthur (1887-1983) Polish-American classical pianist; one of the great pianists of the 20th century. Typed letter signed, 1p, 8¾ x 7¼" (Paris), June 15, 1977. To Mr. Michel, Executive Vice President, United Jewish Appeal Federation, saying that at age 90, he can't be sure that he will be able to accept an invitation in New York. Also, regarding a television interview that Mr. Rubinstein had done, "…I am glad that I did express my feelings about my Jewishness on that particular television show….I am sure that I made the statement with full conviction…."
