Walking Liberty Half Dollars

Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 827
1916. PCGS graded MS-63 PQ. Lovely toning on both sides. Shimmering velvty textured luster and outstanding eye appeal. Mint Director F.J.H. von Engelken (September 1916 to March 1917), said in 1916, "The design of the half dollar bears a full-length figure of Liberty, the folds of the Stars and Stripes flying to the breeze as a background, progressing in full stride toward the dawn of a new day, carrying branches of laurel and oak, symbolical of civil and military glory. The hand of the figure is outstretched in bestowal of the spirit of Liberty. The reverse of the half dollar shows an eagle perched high upon a mountain crag, his wings unfolded, fearless in spirit and conscious of his power. Springing from a rift in the rock is a sapling of mountain pine, symbolical of America." (PCGS # 6566) .
Estimated Value $500-UP.

1917. PCGS graded MS-65. A nice frosty Gem coin, this is the second year of issue. Sharply struck with satiny, mattelike surfaces, a hallmark of the Liberty Walking half dollars struck in 1916 and 1917; when 1918 rolled around (and later), the surface treatment was normalized by the well-meaning mint staff, removing that rugged, coarse, but oh-so beautiful, "textured" effect originally part of A.A. Weinman's artistic expression in the design. Pop 310; 91 finer, 2 in 65+, 85 in 66, 1 in 66+, 3 in 67 (PCGS # 6569) .

1918-D. PCGS graded MS-64+. A nice frosty and mostly white coin. Outstanding quality and overall silvery surfaces. The coin has blazing mint luster and is virtually abrasion-free. In many ways, the strike is almost more important than the mint bloom. Sheer boldness of strike furnishes us something to crow about and something for bidders to appreciate, with only minor weakness found at Liberty's head and hand. Production was lofty at Philadelphia and San Francisco in 1918, due to a wartime boom economy, but fewer coins were minted in Denver that year. The present coin shows strong luster and excellent surfaces required to obtain this desirable PCGS grade. Pop 3; 29 finer, 25 in 65, 1 in 65+, 3 in 66 (PCGS # 6575) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500.

1919-S. PCGS graded MS-65. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Frosty and well struck with a hint of light tone. A foremost rarity that boasts a strong strike on Liberty and flashy white luster throughout. Long known as one of the key dates in the series, the 1919-S Walking Liberty is only on occasion found with a sharp strike, and is a true rarity in Gem MS65 condition. To locate a gem that is well struck is something extraordinary, something no serious buyer should sneeze at. Further, this is could easily make a centerpiece coin in any Walking Liberty set as it that spectacular. Frosty white in the fields and bordered by a nice high rim that is perfectly preserved at the edge, no injury. Looks as if someone hand-picked it from an original roll, if such a thing could be imagined!

As to the rarity, PCGS has graded 39 this high. If you require a well struck example, then be sure to examine this one closely because it has details you simply won't see on most others, even if they grade the same. Quality such as this is never inexpensive, so calculate your bid with awareness there will be other bidders vying for ownership. Pop 39; 15 finer, 4 in 65+, 11 in 66 (PCGS # 6579) .
Estimated Value $15,000 - 17,000.

Lot 831
1919-S. PCGS graded MS-64. CAC Approved. A very popular key date. Light hint of gold tone on the obverse. A well struck near-Gem that has deep silvery mint frost from center to periphery. A few small marks in the left obverse field within the sun rays are noted, otherwise remarkably clean-surfaced for a key date like 1919-D. Struck from properly made dies, the design is very detail to bold in most areas, barring the usual softness along the front of the eagle's left leg.

Since 1914 when the Great War began, much of America's economy had been boosted by manufacturing and production for the war effort, due in great part to inflationary credit and currency expansion. Now, with the slackening need for war related goods, the economy slowed in the United States and entered a period weakness. The Volstead Act (the prohibition of manufacture of alcoholic beverages) was passed by Congress this year. Imports and exports of all goods dropped. The result was that all three operational mints were ordered to produce smaller denomination coinage, Cents, Nickels, Dimes, but fewer Quarters or Half Dollars (no Silver Dollars or gold issues were struck in 1919). Pop 85; 61 finer, 7 in 64+, 39 in 65, 4 in 65+, 11 in 66 (PCGS # 6579) .
Estimated Value $8,000 - 9,000.

1920. ANACS graded MS-63. Frosty and lightly toned. Half Dollar mintage increased noticeably in 1920 at the three mints, P, D, and S, having declined in 1919. However, after this year, production languished with only scattered issues in 1921, 1923, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1933. Full-scale Half Dollar production did not resume until 1934. Housed in an Old Style Holder.

1937. PCGS graded Proof 67+. CAC Approved. Lovely light gold toning. Only 5,728 minted. An unusually high quality coin for a 1937 Proof Walking Liberty, this specimen displays riveting lustrous satin surfaces, is untoned, with superb sharp detail including all skirt details and an impeccable eagle. 1939. NGC graded MS-68. Wispy light obverse toning. A lovely, pristine Gem, there are no offending bagmarks or problems of any sort on either side. 1941. PCGS graded Proof 68. CAC Approved. Lovely hint of rainbow tone on both sides. Virtually perfect smooth fields distribute light in every direction form the surface reflection. In order to understand the near-perfect grade further, notice that the coin is struck with care only now and then found, and primarily on the few Proofs distributed to coin collectors; when it comes to the usual business strike softness at the centers, this carefully made Proof, on the contrary, received a full strike by the dies. Only 15,412 minted. Pop 19; none finer at PCGS (PCGS # 6641) .
